DQ’S UP FOR GRAB

1.At work while your doctor is dictating a patient’s chart note he includes insulting information about a nurse of his (someone you know, of course). He tells about her inappropriate care of his patient and the disciplinary actions to be taken. What to do? Transcribe as dictated in the patient’s chart note? Not transcribe it? Transcribe it in a separate document? Take the information to your supervisor?

2.You had an appointment with your family physician. This physician just happens to dictate reports to the medical transcription company you work for, and you are one of the MTs who work on that site. You go into the system at work and open up the report to see who transcribed your report and to read the report. You know that, as a patient, you have the right to have access to your medical records. Is this a violation of HIPAA? Why or why not.

3. As a “seasoned” transcriptionist, I too, have had instances where I was unable to understand the physician or to successfully research a term the physician was using. During my years of transcription I have often heard the quote: “When in doubt, leave it out.”

This quote obviously is not referring to leaving a blank and flagging the document to be viewed by quality assurance or the physician him/herself, but rather to make the sentence complete by disregarding the information that could not be obtained as long as the information is not critical to the care of the patient. What are your thoughts regarding this quote?

4. POST your entire introductory paragraph and the topic sentences for each of your dress shoes/athletic shoes essay body paragraphs here. Present them in outline form.

Then, EVALUATE the introduction and topic sentences of one of your classmate’s submission. Try to pick one whose work no one else has evaluated. Can you identify the thesis statement? Do all of the topic sentences relate back to the thesis statement? Is there one thing the writer could change to make his/her introduction more interesting to a reader?

5.Review Richard St. John’s presentation “8 traits of successful people” (go to Ted.com, click on Ted-Ed and search by title) from Learning Activity #1 and respond to the following:

1) What is the claim/topic of this presentation?

2) How did the speaker gather the evidence that he used to support his claim?

3) What set St. John on the path to doing this research?

4) Which of the eight traits is your strongest? Explain why. Which trait do you most need to strengthen in order to create your own success? In a paragraph, describe your plan to strengthen that trait?

5)  In a paragraph, explain how these assumptions either apply to your life OR do not apply to your life.

6. Metacognition is characterized as “knowing about knowing.”  Think about what you “know” or have learned in this course.

1) Identify three (3) concepts or skills that you have learned from this course that you think are important to know in helping you be successful in college. Explain, in two to three sentences each, how each concept or skill is important.

2) Next, what are two concepts or skills that you think will help you be successful in the workplace. Explain why you think so.

7. At work while your doctor is dictating a patient’s chart note he includes insulting information about a nurse of his (someone you know, of course). He tells about her inappropriate care of his patient and the disciplinary actions to be taken. What to do? Transcribe as dictated in the patient’s chart note? Not transcribe it? Transcribe it in a separate document? Take the information to your supervisor?

Give a brief paragraph of what you would do in this situation and why.
