Emergency Room Discussion reply

In the emergency room, a common complaint from patients is how long people have to stay in the ER while being seen. A study was done between 5 hospitals to determine average length of stay of patients in the emergency room. The study was done by looking at the electronic records of 841 patients from triage to discharge. According to table 2 in the study, the total number of patients in all five hospitals was 841 with median waiting times of 189,176,270,252, and 276 minutes during their stay (Lucas, Farley, Twanmoh, Olsen, & Evans, 2009). The mean of these wait times is 196.8 minutes, and the median wait time of all five hospitals is 176minutes, with a standard deviation of 90.95. “The confidence interval is a range of values that is likely to contain the true value of the mean (Bennett, Briggs, & Triola, 2018)”. So, the 95% confidence interval range is 190.65-202.95 minutes and the average mean length of stay time for all five hospitals falls within that range.

Factors that would limit the ability to create an interval would be too small of a population. If the sample size is not large enough the margin for error from the mean would be too large and would not include the 85% confidence range. The margin of error for this study is 6.15. If the margin of error is added or subtracted to the mean wait time it still falls within the 95% confidence interval range. The shortest length of stay is 190min while the longest length of stay is 202minutes.
