Philosophical Worldview Preference

  • Which philosophical worldview most closely aligns with your perspective and the way that you view problems in the world? How so?
  • How does understanding the connection between philosophical worldview and research methodology assist in your research approach?
  • Compare/contrast research philosophical worldview with that of a Christian worldview. Are there any areas that are problematic, or do most philosophical worldviews appear to be congruent with a Christian worldview?

As a pragmatist, I am a constant experimenter, proceeding through life by always trying new things and then seeing what worked. Furthermore, I see the worldview from a researcher concept and believes than more one worldview is relevant. When exploring a pragmatic research problem from the most relative aspects of our social environment, perspectives must be addressed with ethical considerations.I am open to multiple methods of data collection, such as qualitative and quantitative sources. Thus, making it more practical in terms of impact and outcomes.

Pragmatism calls for a distinctive way of understanding truth that begins with examining what practical difference ideas or beliefs make and emphasize the importance of conducting research that best addresses the research problem.Furthermore, a pragmatist is a person with goals, desires, and hopes. There are various things that I want to accomplish, and I look at the world as resources to accomplish those projects.

The central points of a pragmatic ethics are a formal rejection of fixed standards and an unquestioning desire of knowledge of the prevailing modern standards.According to Creswell “Pragmatism is not committed to any one system of philosophy and reality. This applies to mixed methods research in that inquirers draw liberally from both quantitative and qualitative assumptions when they engage in their research” (2014, p.10).

Religion is visible in all aspects of our life, and most importantly we are created in the image of God. God has already decided the direction of our lives. According to Sium “What we conclude about God will decide the direction of our lives, as well as formulate our expectations, desires, and objectives. The world can be organized in such personal and meaningful conditions, thus fulfilling human needs” (1995, para. 9).My pragmatism attitude towards religion leads to me to the expectation that different cultures will have different forms of religious expression based upon their goals.

Connection between Philosophical Worldview and Research Methodology

Understanding the connection between philosophical worldview and research methodology will assist my research approach in the following ways.According to Cordeiro, Soares, & Rittenmeyer “Therefore, in thinking about research topics, questions, and literature reviews, I think it is important to logically examine our own disciplines for gaps in that should be considered” (2017).When using the qualitative method, it is important to consider the philosophical assumptions as well as the interpretive framework of collecting, analyzing and interpreting the data.As best stated by Emerald Publishing:

The important point to note here is that using different methods is not simply a matter of amalgamating the data and corroboration of results; rather, the investigator needs to think very carefully as to how the results are being combined, and what findings, or questions, arise (2019, para. 14).

As a pragmatic, I am not limited to a specific philosophical worldview or methodology of research.A mixed, multi-strategy method approach can be used to combine the advantages of both methodologies and diminish their weaknesses. Denzin (2010) stresses, “Inquiry will always be a moral, political and value-laden enterprise” (pp. 424-425).

Philosophical Worldview versus Christian Worldview

A philosophical worldview is a set of foundational systems of beliefs which corresponds to the principles and values through which individuals interpret the world. However, a Christian worldview believes that there is only one set of laws that there is only one set of laws that controls the universe. These ideas come from a biblical worldview.

Furthermore, your moral compass is shaped by your views, whether it is a philosophical or Christian.Christianity instills a set of beliefs that form the basics of our worldview. Different worldviews affect behavior, whether or not we are aware of it. Thus, philosophical worldview might persuade those who do not accept the authority of divine revelation of the bible.

Lastly, the Christian worldview are headed in a destructive direction. Christian worldview is losing its dominance and competing worldviews are becoming more prominent. There are many complex factors behind this, but one invaluable tool for better understanding and engaging with our culture is the concept of the worldviews.Secularism is one of those worldviews that is becoming problematic. This belief that the material world is all there is, and that god is irrelevant. As stated by Rainer “Contrastingly, we must also recognize that not all secular research is congruent with Christianity” (2014, para. 2).
