RE: Discussion – Week 2

Sachmann and Harris Johnson, (2014) created a study that assesses the risk of familicide following marital separation. In this study, Sachmann and Harris Johnson (2014) collected police reports and public information such as newspaper articles to gather data on the qualities of the offender. To conduct the research, Sachmann and Harris Johnson (2014) started to code the information and create a data log of information about the offender and victims to piece together the crime that occurred. The authors were also able to start assessing the risk of familicide-suicide through the understanding of previous crimes and information released from those crimes. Sachmann and Harris Johnson (2014) state that this method was their only way of gathering all the information needed, but there were numerous drawbacks to this method.

While the authors listed numerous drawbacks, they were able to find conclusive information. One of the most controversial results of this research was the dramatic role of depression in these cases, and how untreated depression may lead to the tragic act of familicide-suicide cases. The results of this study also found that there was a pattern in which someone was likely to commit the crime with a specific weapon dependant upon their motive. Those that did have depression were likely to use a gun, whereas other forms of mental illness such as Schizophrenia were likely to kill using other methods such as a violent assault or stabbing, and the suicide will combine with an overdose or asphyxiation. Lastly, the authors found in their qualitative research that men were the primary offenders, and had no diagnosed mental illness, but were likely suffering (Sachmann, Harris Johnson, 2014). As the authors described these findings, Sachmann and Harris Johnson (2014) claimed that separation from spouse often seemed to be the trigger point of the offender. As the authors state: “The offenders were most likely headed towards their tipping point of frustration and anger, particularly if they are suffering from depression or other mental illness. The separation was the point that made them feel there was no way out of misery, and that the offender released that aggression, then felt guilt, shame, or fear (or a combination) and thus killed themselves (Sachmann, & Harris Johnson, 2014)

Based on the R8360 guidelines, there were great aspects of the research, and certainly aspects that can be improved for research. In part one of the critique, the research question needs to describe the phenomenon, consider the target group and proper terminology. Considering the research question “What is the relation between marital separation and the act of familicide/suicide?” This question focuses on the phenomena of families/suicide crimes, which also indicates the target group. There could be an argument that the question lacks scholarly sophistication. However, according to the R8360 guidelines, using non-technical terminology is a benefit as the audience is more likely to understand the research.

Next in the R8360 guidelines is the alignment of the question. Does the research follow the question, and what is not answered in the research but is stated in the question? The research question does focus on the act of separation being a triggering plot in the role of familicide/suicide cases, as well as assessing the risk of familicide in families in which separation is imminent. Thus the question seems to have proper alignment.

Reading the article, the authors due find a gap in the literature and state the gap early on. Much like the inspiration for my dissertation, the authors found that familicide is rarely researched and is a crime that certainly needs to be researched. As the authors stated during the introduction and further explained in the appropriated section, most research focuses on the financial aspects of familicide, but not some of the other root causes. Based on this information, this would be an approrpiate qualitative research and can be considered a strong methodology.
