Overview

As you learned in Chapter 3 of The Mismeasure of Crime, official crime data are derived from normal functions of the criminal justice system, such as police reports that detail offenses, arrest, charges filed, and the like. As you saw in Unit 1, the official data in the criminal justice field has grown tremendously over the years. Official crime data collected according to set procedures and with data sets such as the UCR can be classified in the context of a criminal justice process and scored, once classified, in terms of the number of occurrences. As you recall from Chapter 4 of Fundamentals of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice, there can be sources of ambiguity in concept. There can also be sources of ambiguity, as such, in classifying or categorizing crimes. This can be problematic in that the purpose of the UCR and other databases is to establish uniformity in classifications and scoring to better utilize the data collected.

For this assignment, you will use the data from the FBI’s UCR site (linked in the Resources) for the U.S. burglary rate between 1990 and 2008 as the basis for your responses.

Instructions

  1. Analyze the pattern of changes in the U.S. burglary rate between 1990 and 2008 using the data from the FBI’s UCR website.
  2. Articulate a problem statement that could be used to research this pattern of change over time.
  3. Explain two different substantive reasons (based on criminological theory or crime prevention policies) that would account for this pattern of change over time.
  4. Explore two different measurement or methodological issues that would account for this pattern of change over time.

See below: Study Guide for Assignment 1, Unit 4 COLLAPSE Study guide CJ 4820, Assignment unit 04,1 If you follow this guide, you may be redundant at times.

    1. Summarize the pattern of changes in the U.S. burglary rate between 1990 and 2008 using the data from the FBI’s UCR website.
      • Changes over time
      • Comparison by regions, by extreme states or cities
      • To what extent are the changes due to actual crime or artifact of collecting data (fun speculation with help from the chapter)
      • Or brief reference to academic article that discuss the trends
    2. Articulate a problem statement that could be used to research this pattern of change over time.
      • Should focus on the problems of creating a uniform data base and issues with collection and submissions from local entities. Also speculate about the usefulness of UCRs in studying crime patterns or criminal behavior.
    3. Explain two different substantive reasons (based on criminological theory or crime prevention policies) that would account for this pattern of change over time.
      • Find one good article that discuss this and give me a very brief summary.
      • Or based upon your prior knowledge of crime prevention programs address the question
    4. Explore two different measurement or methodological issues that would account for this pattern of change over time.
      • Plenty of information in the assigned reading on this.
  • In Fundamentals of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Chapter 4, “Conceptualization and Measurement,” pages 70–90.
  • In The Mismeasure of Crime, Chapter 3, “The History of Measuring Crime,” pages 30–64.
