Analysis of Marcel Duchamp Artworks Art Discussion Post

The purpose of this discussion is to give you a chance to dive deeper into the life of an artist and his or her craft. There are many artists covered in this module. Some of them were both sculptors and painters. Some have been included in this section of the text, even though they are sometimes considered “idiosyncratic”.

You will be selecting an artist to research. The textbook does provide an introduction to them and their work; let’s see what else is out there.

For your selected artist, you will be expected to respond to each of the following prompts:

  • Write a short biography. Include if and where they were trained.
  • Describe what the artist was doing, or trying to do, in his or her artwork.
  • Provide at least three examples of art and explain why it fits, or doesn’t fit into the category under which it is listed in the text.
    • This means you will have to look up “idiosyncratic art.”
  • What happened to the artist? Did the artist continue to make art? Did his or her art change? Does the Detroit Institute of Art own any?

Available topics are listed below. However, in order to ensure an even coverage, you need to sign up for your chosen piece on the M12 Discussion Wiki. You are allowed to choose the topic you want to cover, but there are only a limited number of spots for each topic, so make sure you sign up early.
