The benefits of exercise extend far beyond weight management. Research shows that regular physical activity can help reduce your risk for several diseases and health conditions and improve your overall quality of life (Green & Falkner, 2019). Regular physical activity can help protect you from two of the top leading death causing diseases, Heart disease and High blood pressure (HTN). Daily physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke by strengthening your heart muscle and lowering your blood pressure. This also helps raise your high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels (good cholesterol ) while lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (bad cholesterol), improving blood flow, and increasing your heart’s working capacity. During physical exercise, by reducing the fat content in the body, the blood pressure will maintain at a normal base.

As a nurse educating and following up with the patient is very important, to understand if positive change is contributing to them. Before making a plan for the patient, we have to identify any strengths, disability’s, weakness, wants, and desires. Encouraging continuous activity such as walking, using stairs, and moving around throughout the day are important. Participating in Aerobic exercises (brisk walking, swimming, or dancing), strength training (using light weights), or flexibility exercises (stretching) are vital to a great workout regimen, if patient able to tolerate. Having the patient c hoose one or two things they’ve like to try to get started. Then have them set a realistic, achievable plan to make it happen. Advice the patient to keep track of their activity, which they might find that writing everything down helps keep them on target. Providing resources on gyms, group support, and trainers if needed to help the patient meet on a regular basis with others who are also trying to be active, is a positive start. If they feel lonely, they can join a group for exercise and general support or find a walking buddy. Then they can work together to reach your goals.

As Alex Azar states, “Physical activity, along with appropriate dietary intake, is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight because it helps in preventing weight gain, losing weight, and keeping extra weight off once it has been lost. Physical activity also helps reduce abdominal fat and preserve muscle during weight loss. (Azar, 2018). Regardless of what income, race, ethnicity, culture beliefs, or gender we can help make a difference in someone’s lives. Provide as many resources possible and keep educating on the importance on how regular doctor visits along with exercise will have on their lives.
