American Popular Music Discussion Post
We’ve reached the point in the course where we have begun to study American popular music. While you were likely already familiar with many of the genres and artists presented in this module, your study of music appreciation up to this point should have provided you a new lens through which to view them. This discussion will give you a chance to examine an artist that is of interest to you from a whole new perspective and with the knowledge of musical elements of history that you gained throughout the course.
For this discussion, choose an artist who is of interest to you and who falls into one of the genres of American popular music presented in this module (rhythm and blues, soul, rap, country, rock, etc.) and respond to each of the following prompts:
- Which artist did you choose and why? What is it about this performer that interests you?
- Identify the style or genre of music this artist performs and describe where he or she fits into the evolution of this particular type of music. What types of influences (historical and/or musical) are apparent in this artist’s work?
- Provide a link to a piece that your artist performs and describe how the elements of the piece fit in the style or genre you described above. Make sure the piece you choose is appropriate for this forum.
