For the past 14 month I have gone through up and downs with depression. My daughter had an accident and broke a leg, it is amazing how an unexpected event can take you so much off track in life. She has gone through five surgeries one external fixator and four casts. Going through this difficulty in life did make me temporarily deviate from the norm. Mental health professional take deviance from the norm into account in order to define abnormal behavior (Kearney & Trull, 2015). I struggle to adapt to life demands for several months since I was not motivated or could concentrate in any daily life activity in full capacity. I felt frustrated, in constant distress and scared of the future because for quite sometime bone was not responding. In the cognitive aspect I could only think about her and could not concentrate in any other aspect of my life including my other daughter matters. I started behaving a little aggressive and selfish specially with my mother who was feeling as bad as I was but I would not allow her to tell me anything or even comfort me. I consider that I fell under the moderate scale of the chart since I tried my best to ask for days off at work and avoid answering questions from friends and family. Suddenly I realized that the more I cried and suffer the more I was hurting and stressing my daughter who was actually dealing with the worst part. From that moment on I decided to think more positive and let my family get emotionally closer. According to Coon & Mitterer (2009) “Apparently, support from family and friends serves as a buffer to cushion the impact of stressful events” (p.452). For me as a Latin individual was hard to deal with some situations since my family is very nosy and opinionated. From the cultural perspective this had an effect in me because I needed privacy. Life has its up and downs and is full of surprises; everyone deals with them in a different way, but at the end everyone is a little crazy.
