Human Sexuality – Article and Response Post:

Part 1.) Article Discussion and Response: Articles about anything dealing with human sexuality and Human behavior are always being published.  They can be found in newspapers, magazines, on television you tube and all over the Internet. You do not have to agree with the article but you need to back up your statements/information with facts. You need to use critical thinking and consider where your article is being published and who wrote it. Do not use Wikipedia or scholarly journals. Pick items that you think would interest your peers.

Make sure that the same article has not already been posted. Only 1 original post per section Responses must be made before the section closes.

  1. Post a link to your item or cut and paste it.
  2. Discuss what your article is about. Include where you got the article and if you believe it is a valid source. Why did you find it interesting?  Do you agree or disagree with it. Are the findings or statements in the article backed up by valid research? Why do you think it is a disorder and not eccentric behavior?  Which chapter in our book discusses it?
  3. No more than two paragraphs.
  4. Your name is automatically attached to it.
Part 2.) I need to response or give my opinion to the articles below:

Horrific Taboo: Female Circumcision on the Rise in U.S.

nbcnews.com March 30, 2014

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/horrific-taboo-female-circumcision-rise-u-s-n66226 (Links to an external site.)

This article addresses the increase of female circumcision that the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), estimates at least 150,000 to 200,000 girls in the United States are at risk of being forced to undergo genital cutting. The term “at risk” is used because the CDC states there are no actual records of the practice. The practice is generally thought to be common to countries of Africa but, due to immigration the problem has impacted nearly all continents. Surprisingly, as of the date this was published, there had been only one successful prosecution in the U. S.

I find this article more disturbing than interesting and some may question my supporting male circumcision, calling it a double standard. The two procedures have extremely different lines of reasoning, one generally viewed as hygiene or religious view in males and the other for purely to insure chastity in females. I believe that the practice may have begun as an eccentric behavior but, has developed into mental disorder as it similar to self-mutilation or “cutting.” I realize that “cutting” is driven by a need to feel in control and that is the same intent of men seeking women that have been circumcised. I do find the article well researched and firmly agree with it as it is covered in Chapter 5 of our text.

Part 3.) I need to response or give my opinion to the articles below:

This article is called, “I’m NOT turned on by monkey sex!”
This article was written by Dr Janelle Carroll who is the author of our book. I choose this article because I love how blunt and factual she is regarding sex. This article was written to discuss the differences in male and females and how they respond to pornography. A study was done where a probe was placed in the females vagina to measure arousal and a “peter meter” was placed on a mans penis to measure arousal.
The couples were shown different types of pornography ranging from naked people walking down a beach or working out, to gay sex and apes having sex. The results showed that the men responded with their brains and their penis’s while the women responded physiologically but they didn’t report being horny by watching the videos.
Dr Carroll asks a very good question, “Does this mean that women’s sexual arousal is connected to just more than sex? Like the need for them to feel desired and wanted.” This is a great question and one that I think is true. Most women do want to feel affection, valued, appreciated and wanted by their mate. When a woman does not feel the connection with her mate sex is less desirable for her. This article shows through expert opinion that men and women think about sex differently and that it takes work to keep the romance alive in a relationship.
