The title of Foner’s Chapter 17 refers to “Freedom’s Boundaries.” Using MAINLY the material from the past three classes (the West, politics and Populism, and immigrants), but possibly also the material from chapter 16 and pages 516-528, answer one of the following in a short essay of three-five paragraphs (400-700 words) that uses specific evidence from the class material and reading to support a clear main idea:

a. Was the United States circa 1900 “a white man’s country?” Critically assess that idea from the perspective of someone in 1900 commenting on the way the country actually functioned AND the way it “ought” to function.

b. Was the United States circa 1900 “the land of opportunity?” Critically assess that idea from the perspective of someone in 1900 commenting on the way the country actually functioned AND the way it “ought” to function.
