Doctoral Dialogue 5

Module 5 Doctoral Dialogue

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the resources and knowledge needed to successfully prepare for the poster presentation and oral defense of your project.

Synopsis

In this assignment, you will be writing questions that you could be asked during your oral presentation and defense. You and your peers will provide constructive feedback to one another until you have a list of 3-5 appropriate questions that could be used during your oral presentation and defense.

A few tips for creating appropriate questions are listed below:

  • Ask Why, What if, and How (in that order). This addresses the critical stages of problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Ask questions that require analysis and synthesis.
    • How is …similar to and/or different from …
    • What are the consequences of …
  • Ask about problems met during the process and how they were overcome.
  • Ask questions from an opposing perspective.
  • Ask reflection questions.

To prepare for this discussion, you will write an abstract for your final paper and then compose some questions that you feel should be asked as you present your project and defend your work.

Additional information about what an abstract is and appropriate questions for an oral defense can be found in the Module 5 Preparation Details.
