This is my last class before I get my Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration and I am very excited. I have never worked in the healthcare industry but I will finally get to after I graduate. From this course, I am looking forward to putting everything that I have learned from my schooling into one project and show everything that I have learned.A big healthcare issue that I have personally noticed at hospitals, that I plan on using for my capstone project, is that people overuse the emergency rooms for reasons that are not an emergency and that cost the organization a lot of money. Also, with the overuse of the emergency rooms it causes an increase in unpaid hospital bills. By doing this it causes financial problems within the organization. Some individuals use the emergency room for minor problems because they do not have insurance or the money to pay a doctor, which is fine, but then they usually have no intention on paying the hospital bill and not realizing when they do not pay the hospital still has to.Post #2Mary LeslieHello! I am Mary and I currently live in Pinehurst, NC but will be moving to Huntsville, AL in the later part of this course. I have worked in the laboratory field since 1999, as a clinical laboratory scientist. A few years ago, I watched my coworkers face layoffs due our company’s financial issues, even though many were years, or even months from retirement. The way our administrator handled the situation was legal, but it did not seem like a decision I personally could have made with clear conscious. I decided I could complain about the situation, or I could go back to school and (hopefully) help future employees have better work experiences. Though this course I hope to reflect in things I have learned, and maybe forgotten, in previous courses to help develop my capstone project.The healthcare administration issue I will focus on for my capstone project is improving patient quality and safety. Anyone who has worked in healthcare is aware of a time where patient safety and quality were not taken into consideration but may have not been in a position to express their concerns. One such situation that I will never forget was when a CNA at a nursing home attempted to move a patient from a bathtub with a lift, without the necessary staff to assist. They were short-staffed and she had to move the patient alone, the patient flipped out of the lift and hit their head on the bathtub. This resulted in a severe brain injury and the patient’s eventual death. During an investigation it was found that it had become common for one staff member to lift a patient, even though policy stated there should be a minimum of two staff members present when using a patient lift.
