During World War II, the United States tried to paint of itself as the defender of freedom and democracy in the world, but the decades following the war proved the reality of race relations lagged far behind rosy rhetoric. As the nation entered into the Cold War era, African-Americans sought to fight back against white supremacy and racial segregation in the name of liberty and freedom for all, despite the constant threat of violence. In your essay response, discuss how Southern white officials defined liberty and freedom as opposed to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Lyndon B. Johnson. What was King’s response to those who called for social order rather than an end to discrimination? How did Johnson seek to dismantle the institutional barriers in place that fostered racism at the national level?
