The researcher-participant relationship is based on respect for privacy, open communication or interactions, honesty, and avoiding misrepresentations. However, challenging issues may arise when there are contradicting issues and disagreements between researchers and participants. It is important for researchers to plan appropriately before the start of the research and it must be explained clearly on how the study should be conducted and what level of relationship development is necessary. It is the same with the nurse-patient relationship where nurses explain the plan of care, maintain patient privacy, remain culturally sensitive, and develop a trusting relationship with their patients (Cohn, Withrow, Owen, & Ward, 2014). In this way, the nurses can help the patient feel more comfortable and more engage to participate in their plan of care. Communication and education must be on-going for better patient compliance and improved patient outcomes. In my opinion, the patient gets to know their nurses better than their researchers because nurses spend long hours with the patient doing bedside care. While physicians spend shorter time with their patients, they have important roles as advisors and referral sources for their patients. It is necessary for physicians to consider the challenges of the research study in order for them to serve as their patient’s trusted advisors.

Nurse patient relationship is based on trust. The nurse acts as an advocate for the patient. When patients seek health care services or are hospitalized, many are not familiar with the process or what to expect. They may be apprehensive about what’s to come, and not understand the medical jargon being spoken. For some, being spoken to using medical terminology is like a foreign language. Imagine being in a foreign country with people speaking to you and you have no idea what is being said. One can feel helpless and out of control, which may lead to anger or resistance to learning. If a healthy nurse-patient relationship is established from the get-go, the nurses can help the patient feel more at ease in their situation and encourage questions and participate in their care. Nurses are the health professional with more contact with the patients. Nurses are on the front line of health care. Communication must be ongoing and involve patient education. Same thing happens with the researcher-participant relationship. A trust relation must be established between them so that the research can work. The formation of ethical guidelines is essential. The participant must understand the pros and cons of participating and it is the job of the researcher to explain clearly every aspect before the participant signs the consent.
