Barack Obama speech on gun control 5 Jan 2016, political science homework help

Barack Obama’s speech regarding executive actions on gun control Jan 5, 2016 Part 2: Research Paper Assignment You have already spent a great deal of time thinking about and writing about an exemplary rhetorical text of your choice. Your research paper for the semester should include that text as a cornerstone, but should go beyond it to ask a bigger question about why and how rhetoric is effective or ineffective in particular rhetorical situations. • For example, if you have been working on a speech by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and you have been struck by her reliance on comparison and contrast when discussing male and female rights, perhaps you will pursue a research paper that looks at the rhetoric of several early suffragettes and asks what topics of invention are central to the rhetoric of equality. • Or perhaps you have been working on General Patton’s controversial address to the army before D-day and you wonder how other war leaders have addressed their troops before battle. You might go all the way back to Alexander the Great or Henry V and see what is similar and what is different rhetorically, and why that is. Your thesis statement might argue about what is essential to every war leader’s rhetoric in order to be effective. • As a final example, perhaps you have been looking at Abraham Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech and notice the importance of symbolism in the speech and wonder if this was a tendency of Lincoln’s. You might read other speeches that he gave such as his Gettysburg address or his Inaugural addresses and you might develop an argument about what is distinctive about Lincoln’s rhetoric. Thus, your Research paper should consider multiple texts that are tied together either by topic, time period, or author. Your thesis statement should make an argument about the rhetoric of the texts you are studying and should employ vocabulary learned in this course. Support for that thesis statement should come from • Your analysis of the texts (primary sources) • Historical research to provide context (secondary sources) • Informed arguments from credible sources (secondary sources) • Sources about Rhetoric—Course Textbook, other texts (Cicero, Aristotle) • Sources about your texts or speakers Part 3b: Research Paper Requirements (assign during the research paper unit) Length: • 6-9 Pages • 5 ½ pages does not count as six pages • No, that doesn’t include the works cited • Yes, messing with margins and font size will be noticed and will annoy me; consider your audience and avoid annoying the person grading the paper.
