Discussion week 5, Accounting, writing homework help

Marconi is a Portuguese telecommunications company that encountered problems with its ABC system. The company’s production managers felt that 23% of the costs included in the system were common costs that should not be allocated to products and that allocating these costs to products was not only inaccurate, but also irrelevant to their operational cost reduction efforts.

Throughout the 19th century and most of the 20th century, cost system designs were simple and satisfactory. Typically, either one plant-wide overhead cost pool or a number of departmental overhead cost pools were used to assign overhead costs to products. Then conditions began to change. As a percentage of total cost, direct labor began declining and overhead began increasing. Many tasks previously done by direct laborers were being performed by automated equipment—a component of overhead. Companies began creating new products and services at an ever-accelerating rate that differed in volume, batch size, and complexity. Managing and sustaining this product diversity required investing in many more overhead resources, such as production schedulers and product design engineers that had no obvious connection to direct labor-hours or machine-hours. In this new environment, continuing to rely exclusively on a limited number of overhead cost pools and traditional allocation bases posed the risk that reported unit product costs would be distorted and, therefore, misleading when used for decision-making purposes.

Activity-based costing (ABC) is a costing method that is designed to provide managers with cost information for strategic and other decisions that potentially affect capacity and; therefore, “fixed” as well as variable costs. Activity-based costing is ordinarily used as a supplement to, rather than as a replacement for, a company’s usual costing system (e.g., process costing or job order costing). Most organizations that use activity-based costing have two costing systems—the official costing system that is used for preparing external financial reports and the activity-based costing system that is used for internal decision-making and for managing activities.

In activity-based costing, an activity is any event that causes the consumption of overhead resources. An activity cost pool is a “bucket” in which costs are accumulated that relate to a single activity measure in the ABC system. An activity measure is an allocation base in an activity-based costing system. The term cost driver is also used to refer to an activity measure because the activity measure should “drive” the cost being allocated. The two most common types of activity measures are transaction drivers and duration drivers. Transaction drivers are simple counts of the number of times an activity occurs, such as the number of bills sent out to customers. Duration drivers measure the amount of time required to perform an activity, such as the time spent preparing individual bills for customers. In general, duration drivers are more accurate measures of resource consumption than transaction drivers, but they take more effort to record. For that reason, transaction drivers are often used in practice.

Directions:

Concerns over the application of the ABC approach at Marconi have been raised by personnel, including some of the senior leadership team. It is the opinion of some that this method of cost allocation does not accurately reflect the cost of production and will lead to unnecessary improvements that will ultimately result in the elimination of jobs. As a respected member of the leadership team, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has tasked you with investigating the concerns expressed by some of the employee and management officials. You are expected to prepare a position paper either defending the use of the ABC method or recommending an alternative method of cost allocation. In order to formulate your response, you will want to carefully consider the problem, collect relevant data and information, examine the pros and cons of cost allocation models being considered, and document your recommendations using sound arguments that are well supported, properly vetted, and logically presented. It is important that management carefully consider any potential ethical implications associated with their stated position. If there are any potential ethical concerns associated with your position, they should be identified and discussed in the final recommendation should be identified and discussed in the final recommendation.

Prepared your response in Word, the response should explicitly address all required components of this discussion assignment. The document should be prepared consistent with the APA writing style (6th edition) and reflect higher level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and or evaluation).

Unit 3 – Individual Project/650, management homework help

Deliverable Length: 1,500–2,000 words

Description:

The Elora Jean & Co. owner has come to you asking for guidance on a few issues that were brought to her attention. With the rapidly growing workforce, an increasing number of employees have requested extended time off from work. The owner does not want to grant the time off because of its effect on productivity.

When asked for examples of the requests, she provides you with the following scenarios:

Employee #1 has been with Elora Jean & Co. for 13 months. She has requested time off to help care for her terminally ill mother-in-law. She is not sure how long she will need to be out of work, but it could be as long as 3 months.

Employee #2 has been with Elora Jean & Co. for 18 months. His wife just had a baby, and he is asking to take 6 weeks off of work to help with the new responsibilities at home.

Employee #3 developed health problems since her start with Elora Jean & Co. 7 months ago. Her work attendance is unpredictable. She has exhausted all of her sick days and advised her supervisor that her doctor is requiring her to stay home for a period of 6 weeks.

Employee #4, who has been with Elora Jean since the company started, has a son that has been called to active duty for the military. Her son, who is a single parent, has a 3-year-old daughter who needs to be cared for. The employee wants to take 8 weeks off work to get her granddaughter situated and transitioned into a new routine as her father leaves to fulfill his military responsibilities abroad.

As the human resources (HR) consultant, you have many questions, and you would like to gather all of the necessary information before providing additional guidance or recommendations. You are aware of the company’s legal limitations and discretions, such as the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The owner has also advised you that the company has no formal leave policy for any type of employee absence, other than 7 paid sick days per year.

After conducting your research, in a memo to the owner, address the following questions:

Considering the Elora Jean & Co. work environment and history (124 employees, in business for 18 months, mix of union and nonunion), is the company currently exposed to any legal risk by not having a defined leave policy in place? If so, what are the risks and the penalties for violation?

Of the 4 employee cases described, discuss whether each one would qualify for FMLA leave. Why or why not?

For employees who do not qualify under FMLA, what would you recommend to the company? Explain other employee leave options for the company without compromising the company’s financial objectives.

Develop a sample leave policy to be presented to the company owner. Be sure that the policy covers the key components of a comprehensive leave policy, including requirements for eligibility, leave benefits provided, job restoration, pay, and benefits status while on leave. Outline a summary of your recommendations to the company owner, and advise her about the value of implementing this type of policy.

Assignment Objectives:

Define and apply legal terminology to employment issues.

Examine the range of legal liability for HR.

Examine the relationship between employment law and HR policies.

ENG1101 Evaluation Essay Assignment

Evaluation Essay Assignment

Write a thesis-driven essay that evaluates a single work, using specific reasoning/evidence derived from criteria to support your stance.

Formatting

This assignment should follow MLA formatting guidelines.

Key Terms

Evaluation: a claim that something is good or bad, right or wrong, useful or not

Criteria: things that matter in deciding whether your subject succeeds or doesn’t succeed, is strong or weak, or good in some respects and poor in others

Balance and fair assessment: allows for shades-of-gray argument strategies. Rarely is anything all good or all bad, so you need to acknowledge any weaknesses in things you praise and any positives in things you criticize. For example, a movie may have spectacular visuals but a tired and clichéd plot.

Purpose: To practice and develop the ability to construct, define, and support evaluative criteria; to generate a thesis based on evaluative criteria, revise the thesis in order to increase its effectiveness, and arrange, draft, and write a persuasive essay.

Assignment Summary

For this assignment, you will write an evaluation about some type of media product (a book, movie, album, video game, etc). You will develop a set of criteria on which you will base your judgment, and using those criteria, will explain your judgment to your audience.

Assignment in Detail

Your evaluation will be similar to the book or movie reviews you might read online, but you will need to tailor it for an academic audience. You will provide a balanced assessment, so you will need to discuss both the positive and negative aspects (strengths and weaknesses) of your text. That being said, your evaluation will probably be stronger if you do not write about something you love; you may not see the flaws. First, you will decide on a text. Then, you will create a list of criteria that you may consider using to evaluate the text. While making this list, you should consider the text’s rhetorical situation, such as its genre, audience, purpose, and stance. With the rhetorical situation in mind, ask yourself what factors would make this book, movie, etc. successful. Then return to your subject and see which of these criteria it meets, and which it does not, and find examples of ways it does or does not meet your criteria. Your essay should be guided by a thesis statement that states your overall evaluation or judgment of the text. Since no text is perfect and none are completely without merit, your thesis should balance the pros and cons; it should offer a judgment of the text but qualify it according to your criteria. The criteria you choose should be clearly defined at the beginning of your essay. You should also include a concise description of the text you evaluate toward the beginning of your essay, since your audience may not be familiar with your subject.

Note that summarizing the text should be a small portion of the final essay.

The bulk of your essay should attempt to persuade your reader to accept your judgment of the text. Thus, you will need to incorporate the most convincing and important reasons why your judgment is correct. You will also need to consider how to best factually support your reasons. Do not use any outside sources beyond your chosen text.

Some thoughts about this assignment

Choose a subject that you are familiar with. For example, if you choose a book, choose one that you have read before, and then reread it. The more familiar you are with the subject, the better your essay will be.

Think carefully about purpose and stance. Do you want to encourage or discourage others from reading, watching, etc. the work you evaluate?

Your evaluative criteria are extremely important for this essay. Establish the criteria early on in the writing process. Your judgment of the work depends on these criteria. That means that if your criteria are weak or faulty, your judgment will follow, leaving your audience unconvinced.
