Will a negative story be allowed to run in a high school newspaper?

 THE SCENARIO:

As a high school journalist, you have developed several sources of information about the football camp held each year at your school. You hear that brutal hazing is part of athletes’ initiation to the team. Investigating further, you learn that new players are subject to various humiliations and assaults, sometimes with broomsticks, electrical cords and socks stuffed with tennis balls.

This is a big, important story. Kids are being hurt. You work hard to get your facts right and spend a great deal of effort checking and double-checking your sources. Your newspaper’s adviser supports you and your work. But when you are ready to publish the story in the school newspaper, the principal says you can’t run it unless you make substantial changes. You must eliminate a player’s comments and add a prepared statement from the football coach. The coach also says this is “negative journalism” and wants you to hold the story until after the playoffs.

 What do you do?

A. Drop the story. You know you’ve done a good job, but if the principal won’t let you run the story as you have prepared it, you won’t run it at all.

B. Wait until after the playoffs, as the coach requests, and then print the story according to the principal’s requirements: Drop the player’s comments and run the football coach’s statement. At least some of the information you have uncovered will come out.

C. Print the story as your principal demands, by dropping the player’s comments and running the football coach’s statement. But add an editor’s note at the end of the story, explaining that school officials, including the coach, reviewed the story and insisted that changes be made to it before it was published.

D. Your own solution to the dilemma. Be specific.

10.0 % Layout The layout is cluttered, confusing, and does not use spacing, headings, and subheadings to enhance the readability. The text is extremely difficult to read with long blocks of text, small point size for fonts, and inappropriate contrasting colors. Poor use of headings, subheadings, indentations, or bold formatting is evident. The layout shows some structure, but appears cluttered and busy or distracting with large gaps of white space or a distracting background. Overall readability is difficult due to lengthy paragraphs, too many different fonts, dark or busy background, overuse of bold, or lack of appropriate indentations of text. The layout uses horizontal and vertical white space appropriately. Sometimes the fonts are easy to read, but in a few places the use of fonts, italics, bold, long paragraphs, color, or busy background detracts and does not enhance readability. The layout background and text complement each other and enable the content to be easily read. The fonts are easy to read and point size varies appropriately for headings and text. The layout is visually pleasing and contributes to the overall message with appropriate use of headings, subheadings, and white space. Text is appropriate in length for the target audience and to the point. The background and colors enhance the readability of the text.

Some distracting inconsistencies in language choice (register) and/or word choice are present. The writer exhibits some lack of control in using figures of speech appropriately. Language is appropriate to the targeted audience for the most part. The writer is clearly aware of audience, uses a variety of appropriate vocabulary for the targeted audience, and uses figures of speech to communicate clearly. The writer uses a variety of sentence constructions, figures of speech, and word choice in distinctive and creative ways that are appropriate to purpose, discipline, and scope.
5.0 % Mechanics of Writing (Includes spelling, punctuation, grammar, and language use.) Slide errors are pervasive enough that they impede communication of meaning. Frequent and repetitive mechanical errors distract the reader. Some mechanical errors or typos are present, but are not overly distracting to the reader. Slides are largely free of mechanical errors, although a few may be present. Writer is clearly in control of standard, written academic English.
5.0 % Evaluating and Documenting Sources (In-text citations for paraphrasing and direct quotes, references page listing and formatting, as appropriate to assignment and style.) Contains no title slide, no references section, and no correctly cited references within the body of the presentation. Title slide is incomplete or inaccurate. References section includes sources, but many citation errors. Citations are included within the body of the presentation, but with many errors. Title slide has minor errors. References section includes sources, but they are not consistently cited correctly. Citations are included within the body of the presentation but with some errors. Title slide is complete. Lockout and labor-management partnerships

APA format

We often hear about employees going on strike to get what they want. We hear less about a tool that management uses known as a lockout that was discussed in Chapter Eight. We will be looking the third straight lockout in the National Hockey League (fourth in the last 21 years), the 2012 NHL lockout, and the lasting damage that it may cause. This tool will become more real to you as you watch the two NHL videos and read the short Boston Globe article.

Your assignment is to read the article and watch the videos on this topic; then, thoroughly and thoughtfully answer the following questions based on this material and last week’s readings in your text:

1. Discuss who you believe if correct in this battle.  Do you support the player or the owners in these negotiations?  Support your decision based in information from the videos.

2. Do you believe that video made by the NHL Players Association is an effective tactic?

3. Do you really believe that lockouts such as these cause lasting damage? Support your answer. How is this different from 2004-2005 (see the videos and article)?

Part 2

  • Full-fledged labor-management partnerships are rare.  Why?  In you answer, do not blame only labor unions.  In other words, be sure to identify reasons why a variety of stakeholders (shareholders, managers, employees and union leaders) might resist the formation of labor-management partnerships.
  • While not sharing a concern for psychological motivators and rewards, Fredrick Winslows Taylors views illustrate the human resource management school’s perspective on employment relationship conflict and labor unions.  Explain.
