Assignment: Offenders Reentering Communities

Within the criminal justice system, the classification of the crime and the classification of the offender will, in large part, determine the available pathways for the offender to return to the community. Individuals who have committed violent crimes are less likely to be allowed probation as an alternative to incarceration, whereas first-time offenders are likely to be seen as better candidates for community treatment programs.

The Assignment (2–3 pages):

Consider an offender group relevant to your current or future profession, including needs and concerns for this group. Ex. Sex offenders, abusive/neglectful parents, etc.

Analyze the community placement pathways available for offenders in your community (city/county/state). Explain what they are, how they work, and the strengths and limitations of each.

Evaluate the Interactive Community in terms of resources and pathways for the offender population you selected. Explain what is done well and what could be improved regarding the resources available.

What you submit to the drop box below will vary depending on which form of expression you choose above. Research Paper

Select
two social media websites to observe (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are a few of the popular social media websites).

Choose a topic to research, and read the comments or describe the visual posts/photos from the websites you have chosen. If possible, select a website that includes postings that appear to be from somewhere other than the United States. Topics about politics, cultural diversity, and current events are great selections from which to choose.

Write a 1,050 word blog post about online discrimination on social media websites.

Include the following in your blog:

  • What were some forms of discrimination you witnessed in the comments? Indicate what you think triggered the discriminatory comments and decipher which cultural dynamics might be informing these. How did other online users react to the discriminatory comments and which cultural dynamics are more than likely informing these responses?
  • Because social media websites can be accessed internationally, conjecture as to how these inter- and or multi-cultural postings might be interpreted by someone from another culture. Continue your conjecture and deduce the communication needs that these possible inter- or multi-cultural postings potentially uncover.
  • Provide at least three examples of the discriminatory comments you read, and explain the ramifications of what must be “learned” communication to multicultural sensitivity. How could interdisciplinary education and cultural awareness improve these communications?
  • How would you respond to negative comments if they were directed toward you? Ethically defend what would be your reaction. Using persuasion, discuss how online users can promote positive language in online communication.

Wellness Evaluation

Learning how to manage personal lifestyle choices is known as the self-help approach. This approach assumes that individuals can control some aspects of the environment that contributes to harming health. This week, you have learned about the eight dimensions of wellness and how there must be a balance between these dimensions to achieve overall health and wellness. For this journal assignment, you will complete a personal assessment of each dimension of wellness.

To begin, assess your personal wellness by completing Laboratory 1-1: Wellness Evaluation on pages 21-26 of your course textbook. Write out your results and answers to these questions so it is easier to reference them within your journal (evaluation results are attached).

In your journal, examine the effects of certain lifestyle factors on your wellness and think critically about your overall wellness by addressing the following bulleted items:

Describe your wellness score for each area of wellness.

Discuss your three weakest dimensions of wellness.

Explain what current lifestyle factors lead to these weaknesses.

If this dimension is not improved, what chronic disease may be the result? Use a reference to support this relationship.

Explain your three strongest dimensions of wellness.

Which of your lifestyle factors led to these strengths? Explain how.

Discuss one way you can improve one of your weakest dimensions of wellness.

For the journal assignment, write out each question and then answer it. Your journal should be a minimum of one page in length (not including the title page or reference page). As a minimum, include one reference in your response to this lab activity. Include an APA formatted title page and reference page.
