Case study PUB 503

Many threads entwined, like a handmade quilt, to form a concept of power that encompasses and binds all those that participate. From the very beginning, the point of conception, we are constantly impacted by what appears to be random acts of irregularities observed in the immediate surroundings. We were brought into world torn between the values and activities of our caretakers and those that are held responsible for managing our environment. For the most part if we abide by the norms and rules of the governments and those organizations that hold us accountable, we become basically invisible to those that are in charge.  However sometimes unintended events happen that leaves us helpless to the point we have to reach for those in government to helps us in our hour of need. Depending on who you deal with, an elected official, a career a public servant, or a private contractor, this could turn into a nightmare.

Your case study is to explore how politicians’, career civil servants and those private contractors employed by the government to deal with those challenges in an area of your interest.  This could be problems that deal with the homeless, victims of natural disasters, health challenges, transportation, global warming and a whole host of local and global challenges. Unfortunately the government can’t solve all of our personal problems, but that doesn’t mean they are not allow to help when the opportunity arises.   Enjoy.

Data Analysis Project 1

For this project each student will learn and demonstrate competency in researching economics; that is, creatively designing a research question, locating pertinent and credible data to support an answer, and presenting results in a professional and articulate manner. The skill set practiced in this project is highly valued in business and government occupations. Follow these steps to complete the project:

  1. Using the data covered in the Demography and Housing slides, generate five research questions to study (e.g. “Have home prices in the U.S. increased since 2010?”, “What is the racial composition of U.S. males?”). You are to create two research questions from Demography, two from Housing, and one from either category. You are to use at least 3 different data sources (e.g. census, CDC, NAR, etc.) in the overall project.
  • Excel File: For each research question create an Excel sheet with your data set and one graph. You are to use each of the following graphs once in the overall project:
    • Bar chart (horizontal or vertical)
    • Pie chart
    • Histogram
    • Frequency table,
    • Scatterplot (lined or unlined).
  • PowerPoint Presentation: For each question, create a PowerPoint slide containing one graph, up to three bullet points (optional), and hyperlinks to your data source website (make sure the links works). The PowerPoint should also contain an introduction slide                            (e.g. name, project #, and class).
  • Submission: Upload the Excel and PowerPoint file into the link provided in Blackboard by the due date (no e-mailed copies).
  • Grading: Project grade is weighted 50/50 for Excel/PowerPoint; however, both must be submitted to receive a score. Excel graphs must be derived from the data input in Excel.  The PowerPoint is graded subjectively as a presentation to your fellow classmates so cosmetics, spelling, character size, color, creativity all matter.
  • Academic Integrity: Do not copy graphs from websites nor replicate another student’s work.

FASB Project -Broad Transactions

“The mission of the Financial Accounting Standards Board is to establish and improve standards of financial accounting reporting for the guidance and education of the public, including issuers, auditors, and users of financial information.” (http://www.fasb.org)

Project Objective

Describe the history, current status, and adoption implications of a Financial Accounting Standards Board ongoing project.

Requirements

The FASB has several ongoing projects that involve the review of standards and which may result in updates and/or revisions of financial accounting standards. You should select an ongoing FASB project after visiting the Technical Plan and Project Updates sections of the FASB Web site.

In a five- to seven-page paper, you should describe the project, its history (briefly), and the project’s status. The final section of your paper should describe the implications of the project’s adoption. For example, a paper might discuss a project that would result in accelerating the recognition of certain expenses and require additional disclosures.

Specifically:

Familiarize yourself with the project, including information on the history and background of the project and its status.

Using resources at www.fasb.org (including free access to U.S. GAAP codification if you register at the Web site as explained), identify the relevant GAAP and current standards involved. Discuss the proposed change (i.e., what will be different?) and the reasons for the change.

Using at least three different databases in the UMUC library, find at least five sources of information on this FASB project. As you conduct research, identify an actual case that may have provided the impetus for this proposed change, or that would have been influenced by the proposed change. At least two sources should be from scholarly or professional journals. Maintain a research log to document your research process. You will find a research log template (sample research tracker) posted in Course Content.

Frequently the large Accounting Firms have extensive analyses of FASB topics. It is strongly recommended to become familiar with these websites.  Occasionally they will also offer free webinars on FASB topics.

Prepare an annotated bibliography. See Course Content for more information and a sample annotated bibliography.

Identify stakeholders and the impact of the proposed change on each of the stakeholders (comment letters may provide good insight).

Deliverables

Write a five- to seven-page paper (APA format, single spaced, standard paper size, one-inch margins, and 12-pointfont) presenting the results of your work. Submit your paper, research log, and annotated bibliography by the due date, or as otherwise instructed.  Cover pages, abstract/ executive summary, table of content if you chose to include or bibliography / reference lists do not count toward page count.

Format

Submit your paper and annotated bibliography as a Word document. The research tracker can be in either Word or Excel.

The written communication aspect of this assignment is weighted at 50 percent of the total assignment. The grading will be allocated equally in the following areas:

assignment management

organization and structure

evidence and arguments

readability, style, and mechanics

presentation

INFO-CLA
