Case Study Instruction and Evaluation

 In answering the assigned questions, please always note the following:

  • Answer only the assigned question(s)
  • A well-developed answer is required
  • Thoughtful and thorough answers are expected
  • Avoid rehashing case facts
  • Make reasonable assumptions
  • Don’t confuse symptoms with problems
  • Make effective use of financial and other quantitative developed in the case
  • Make good use of evidence developed in the case

Case Study Grading

You will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Case Studies should have 500-words MINIMUM.  The best work exceeds the minimum word count above.
  • Include cover page, abstract, and reference pages — these do not count towards your total word count.
  • Use TWO authored outside references with all submissions (an outside reference is something in addition to our class textbook).  You must quote from this reference!.
  • Utilize APA formatting at the end of your submission FOR all assignments…if you do not, you will lose points.
  • Case studies must be submitted in a Microsoft Word document. 

 Writing Style Expectations

The following are writing style expectations:

  • Use subject headers for all papers – your reader appreciates and expects that level or organization to your work!
  • No contractions & No abbreviations – if you are referring to the United States of America, write it out…do not write ‘US’ – this is not stellar academic writing.
  • Use Times New Roman 12-point font, 1″ margins, double-spacing  with 0 point spacing.
  • Only one citation credit allowed per sentence in this course.
  • Indent the first line of each new paragraph five spaces.
  • No extra blank lines inserted between sections – deliver a tight paper.
  • No bullet points, alphanumeric lists, or numbered list – write formally in full sentences / paragraphs.
  • Numbers one through nine within your paper should be written out
  • Cover page and reference page required for ALL paper submissions
  • Never use all capital letters
  • Use authored references for your research to earn full points.  An authored source is simply one that is associated with a human(s) NAME.   For example, your textbook is an authored source.  The United States Census Bureau is not an authored source.  But it is fine to use as long as you ALSO use an authored reference source.
  • Always include the full URL as to where you found your research online articles – never just the home page.
  • Avoid wikis, blogs, tweets, videos, dictionaries, and encyclopedias as outside references – use Masters-level sources like the Journal of Marketing or the Journal of International Business – No wikis, prezis, slideshares, dictionaries, encyclopedias, videos, interviews, & podcasts allowed as references – only scholarly written sources from well-respected sources.

Website Review/Chapter Presentation: The is an individual exercise. Each student will select an excellent web site about one assigned chapter and share it with the class on the Discussion Board during the assigned week. This event could be a link to a game or simulation that is related to your topic. The due date of this assignment varies (Week 3-7); therefore, please do check the schedule for your deadline.

WEB SITE TOP PICK  – Starting on Week three, I would like each of you to select excellent web sites about one assigned chapter (this assignment could contain a link to a game or simulation that is related to your topic). Make sure that they are meaningful and relevant (4 pt), also explain what the site is about (4 pt), including what is your favorite site and why (2 pt). Keep it short.

One or more people may be asked to focus on the same chapter. Again, this is an individual submission.  Although two or more students will be assigned one chapter, students will NOT be working in teams on this assignment. Post your work to the weekly discussion forum under “Discussion Board.”

Performance management is a continual process of identifying, measuring, and developing individual and/or team performance, and aligning performance with organizational strategy. In this paper you will develop the foundation of a Strategic Performance Management Plan by detailing how an employee will be rated in a particular job function. You may want to search job openings and find a job that is of interest to you, or create a performance management plan for a position in your organization that is lacking one, or use the job from your Job Analysis assignment. You must identify the organization and the job function. The Strategic Performance Management Plan needs to be specific to the job function and organizational strategy, and not general in nature (see chapter six for examples). Make sure you have access to the strategic plan of the organization since your plan must connect to the strategy.

Include in your paper:

1. Brief background of the organization including their vision and/or mission.

2. Brief highlights of their current strategy

3. Brief job description

4. Most importantly: at least 5 attributes that will be rated. The attributes may be either results focused, behavior focused, or both. For each attribute explain how it connects to the organization’s strategy, specifically how performance will be measured, and the range of performance measures (possibly ranging from did not meet expectations to exceeded expectations, etc.).

Your paper needs to be APA style, using APA section headings, 5-6 pages double spaced (plus cover and reference page), with at least 3 scholarly references.

Research Paper:  The research paper is an individual exercise. We have known for quite a while now that all businesses have many things that have an impact on their overall effectiveness. If we were to use culture as an example, one might find that the internal culture of the organization is unique to the organization. Besides, each employee contributes a specific skill set and also personality with inherent values and beliefs, and those will determine how they will interact in the workplace. For many researchers in organizational behavior, this is just one of the things that they look at to determine the overall effectiveness of the organization. Therefore, it is critical that we look at employee interactions and organizational processes as a whole to create effective, efficient organizations.

Based on what you have learned thus far and as you begin to ponder your research paper, we would like you to conduct some research on what critical factors are needed to make an organization more effective. Using your book and other research, your well-written paper will analyze the elements of an effective organization, using organizational behavior concepts as the lead. Therefore, your research paper should address the following:

  • Describe the components necessary for an effective organizational structure, evaluating how working in this era of globalization may have an impact on its function.
  • Evaluate various communication strategies needed for effective organizations.
  • Be sure to assess the principles of effective management and where it comes into play with leadership. 
  • Examine decision-making, and problem-solving processes need to make an organization effective.
  • Suggest a leadership approach that could contribute to organizational effectiveness and justify the choice.

The late 1920s and 1930s were a time when many Americans endured the humiliation of rampant racism as well as crushing poverty. Yet most mainstream popular music (exemplified by the Tin Pan Alley style) avoided these issues and focused instead on escapist themes of privacy and romance.
