Professor’s comment:

We have five possible topics to tackle this week, which begins Monday, Sept. 16. Many people do not realize that we fought a war against Mexico over land issues (Keene, 2013). And then there was the notion of Manifest Destiny, wherein God’s will was accomplished by our securing the rest of the land to the Pacific Ocean (Keene, 2013; Roark, 2009, pp. 350, 363). It is a fascinating term to explore.

What were the different meanings of this? And if you lived at the time, would you have gone West toward this land of opportunity?

Select two of these five events and interact with the text and lesson, and any other authoritative sources you may find. Thanks!

Competing Viewpoints Paper

Competing Viewpoints Paper Guidelines

As historians, we are constantly engaged in an ongoing intellectual conversation stretching back generations. The purpose of this assignment is for you to enter this conversation by reading, analyzing, and critiquing the arguments presented by historians with differing positions on an important topic or theme. Each chapter in Major Problems in the Early Repubilc contains such essays, and each student is to select one SET of essays listed in the syllabus and write a short paper summarizing, analyzing, and evaluating their arguments. For some tips on reading historical scholarship and writing analytical reviews, see the relevant handouts posted in the Writing Resources folder on our class Blackboard site.

Task: In a well-organized, thesis-driven paper of 4-6 pages, students will:

  • briefly summarize the central argument of each piece
  • discuss the methods or sources used by the authors
  • explain how the pieces relate to each other and to other shared readings from the course
  • evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each piece
  • Do you agree or disagree strongly with one author? Why?

Formatting:

  • All papers should have an introduction and conclusion that clearly state the paper’s central ARGUMENT – in other words, you should explain here what YOU are saying about the essays, their arguments, and their significance. Summarizing their arguments or the topics they cover is not sufficient. YOU need make a claim about the scholarship, and support that claim with evidence from the texts.
  • Papers should have a single-spaced heading that includes the student’s name, course number, and date, followed by the paper title. A separate title page is not necessary. All pages should be numbered.
  • Standard formatting rules apply – 12 pt. font, Times New Roman or other standard font, 1” margins, double-spaced.
  • All sources MUST be cited with Chicago Style footnotes (see Chicago Style Citation handout on Blackboard)

Assignment

Before moving through diagnostic decision making, a social worker needs to conduct an interview that builds on a biopsychosocial assessment. New parts are added that clarify the timing, nature, and sequence of symptoms in the diagnostic interview. The Mental Status Exam (MSE) is a part of that process. The MSE is designed to systematically help diagnosticians recognize patterns or syndromes of a person’s cognitive functioning. It includes very particular, direct observations about affect and other signs of which the client might not be directly aware. When the diagnostic interview is complete, the diagnostician has far more detail about the fluctuations and history of symptoms the patient self-reports, along with the direct observations of the MSE. This combination greatly improves the chances of accurate diagnosis. Conducting the MSE and other special diagnostic elements in a structured but client-sensitive manner supports that goal. In this Assignment, you take on the role of a social worker conducting an MSE.

MGT/312 Week 3 Essay questions

Arrow furniture is a family-owned and operated manufacturer of high-end furniture located in North Carolina. The furniture industry has suffered from foreign competition over recent years. Nationwide, there have been massive layoffs and several large companies have closed. Arrow’s workers are feeling these pressures and have begun displaying counterproductive behaviors. The HR manager recently told Mary Baker, the family member serving as CEO, that employees are threatening to unionize if they don’t get higher pay and more job security. Mary is upset by this comment because the family has supported employees with decent salaries and health benefits. Higher wages are the last thing the company needs if they are to remain competitive.

The Baker family wants to turn things around. They know they will have to be more competitive price-wise. This might be achieved by finding cheaper suppliers, lowering employee labor costs, or increasing productivity. That said, the Baker’s strongly believe that it is important to “take care of their people,” many of whom are lifelong employees.

A global car manufacturer is going to open a new facility in the community. It is likely the company will offer higher salaries and better benefits than offered by Arrow Furniture. The firm is known to offer such benefits in an attempt to reduce the need for a union. Jobs at this plant will be more technically advanced than those at Arrow and the company is offering job training to those who are interested. The Bakers are aware that the nature of the work at Arrow results in moderate levels of hygiene factors and low motivators.

Using the 3-Step Problem-Solving Approach and the Organizing Framework, what should the Bakers do to motivate their employees and get support for the company’s future plans?

Using these learning objectives: Compare and contrast the content theories of motivation:McGregor’s Theory X/Theory Y; Maslow’s need hierarchy theory; Acquired needs theory; Self-determination theory; Herzberg’s motivator-hygiene theory.

Write a short essay answering the question, using proper APA format and correct grammar.

Please provide 3 references.
