Study Description: A school educator is interested in determining the relationships between grade point average (GPA) and IQ scores among ninth graders. The educator takes a random sample of 40 ninth graders aged 14 years old and administers the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). The WISC-IV includes a Full Scale IQ (FSIQ; however for this assignment we will just call it IQ) that comprises verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed skills.

Answer the following Questions:

  1. Hypothesis – Formulate a hypothesis about the two variables. What do you think is the relationship between IQ scores and GPA?
  2. Variables – Identify the variables and each of their attributes: discrete or continuous, quantitative or categorical, scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio), and independent or dependent.
  3. Descriptive statistics – Write an overview of the descriptive statistics (at least two paragraphs), including the appropriate and necessary statistical results within sentences and in proper APA formatting.  Be sure to provide sufficient explanation for any numbers presented.  Include the following in your discussion: 
    • How do the measures of central tendency and variability provide us with an overview of the characteristics and shape of the distribution of each variable?  What are these statistic
    • Keeping in mind that the WISC-IV has a mean of 100 and Standard Deviation of 15, what assumptions could you make about the IQ scores and suitability of this IQ test for the group of students sampled?
    • Keeping in mind that the WISC-IV has a mean of 100 and Standard Deviation of 15, how many students’ IQ scores in this sample are within one standard deviation below the test’s mean? Two standard deviations below the test’s mean? What percentage of students in this sample had an IQ score less than or equal to 70? An IQ score greater or equal to 100?
  4. Correlation – Write an overview of the results of the correlation (at least two paragraphs), including the appropriate and necessary statistical results within sentences and in proper APA formatting.  Be sure to provide sufficient explanation for any numbers presented.  Consider the following in your overview and conclusions: 
    • Is there a significant correlation between IQ scores and GPA? If so, what does a significant correlation mean?
    • Using the correlation table and scatterplot, explain whether the relationship is positive, negative, or no correlation.
    • Describe the strength of the relationship (e.g. very strong, moderate, weak, etc.).
    • What do the results tell us about our hypotheses?
    • What conclusions can we draw from these results?  What conclusions can we NOT make using these results?
    • What issues regarding the sample used or how the data was collected should be considered in the interpretation of the data?
  5. Regression – Write an overview of the results of the regression (1 paragraph), including the appropriate and necessary statistical results within sentences and in proper APA formatting.  Be sure to provide sufficient explanation for any numbers presented.  Consider the following in your overview and conclusions: 
    • In the regression, what variable is the dependent variable and what variable is the independent variable?
    • What do the regression results tell us about IQ scores and GPA?

Test Development Proposal

This assignment is the first step toward completing your Test Development Proposal in Week 6. Select a construct of interest (e.g. depression, anxiety, self-esteem, marital satisfaction, social persuasion, job satisfaction, etc.) that you are interested in (this can include an area of interest for your dissertation as well) and using the test publisher websites (i.e. Pearson Assessments, Western Psychological Services (WPS), etc.) provided in the week’s readings (or through other sources such as articles, test reviews, etc. found in the UoR library), compile a list of currently available standardized tests/instruments that purport to measure the construct (between 5 and 7 tests/instruments is adequate). Concerning your construct of interest:

  • Explain your construct of interest. Make a case for why this construct is important to you, the field of psychology, or your specialization area.
  • What specifically about your construct are you wanting to assess? Are there different characteristics or behaviors that can be assessed within your construct? For example, if measuring depression as a construct, would you want to measure the severity of depression or the symptoms related to depression? What are all the characteristics of depression? Would you be assessing all of the characteristics?
  • Develop a research question addressing what you will be assessing.

Concerning available tests/instruments:

  • What is the validity and reliability of each test/instrument?
  • What types of scores and scales are provided?
  • What information does the test publisher (or other source) provide about each of the test’s/instrument’s strengths and weaknesses/limitations?

Discussion: Applying Differential Diagnosis to Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Social work clinicians keep a wide focus on several potential syndromes, analyzing patterns of symptoms, risks, and environmental factors. Narrowing down from that wider focus happens naturally as they match the individual symptoms, behaviors, and risk factors against criteria A–E and other baseline information in the DSM-5.  Over time, as you continue your social work education, this process will become more automatic and integrated. In this Discussion, you practice differential diagnosis by examining a case that falls on the neurodevelopmental spectrum.  

To prepare:  Read “The Case of Bogdan” and identify relevant symptoms and factors. You may want to make a simple list of the symptoms and facts of the case to help you focus on patterns. Read the Morrison (2014) selection. Focus on Figure 1.1, “The Roadmap for Diagnosis,” to guide your decision making. Identify four clinical diagnoses relevant to Bogdan that you will consider as part of narrowing down your choices. Be prepared to explain in a concise statement why you ruled three of them out. Day 3 Post a 300- to 500-word response in which you address the following:  Provide a full DSM-5 diagnosis of Bogdan. 

Remember, a full diagnosis should include the name of the disorder, ICD-10-CM code, specifiers, severity, and the Z codes (other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention). Keep in mind a diagnosis covers the most recent 12 months. Explain the diagnosis by matching the symptoms identified in the case to the specific criteria for the diagnosis. Identify which four diagnoses you initially considered in the case of Bogdan, using the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria to explain why you selected these four items. In one or two sentences each, explain why three of these diagnoses were excluded. Explain any obvious eliminations that could be made from within the neurodevelopmental spectrum. Describe in detail how Bogdan’s symptoms match up with the specific diagnostic criteria for the primary disorder that you finally selected for him. Note two other relevant DSM-5 criteria for that illness from the sections on “diagnostic features” and “development and course” that fit his case. 

By Day 6 Respond to at least two colleagues in the following ways:  Compare the diagnosis you provided and the process in which you reached the diagnosis with those of your colleague. Explain how the Z codes (other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention) that your colleague identified may influence Bogdan’s upcoming treatment.

As a social worker, often you need to use your policy advocacy skills to ensure that your clients are receiving the services that they need. Although you may tend to think of policy advocacy skills as separate from your clinical social work skills, they are very similar. Think of the skills that you would use in working with a client such as Jake Levy. How could you apply these skills to policy advocacy? How will you use these skills to identify the policy and social problems that are impacting these families?
