American history paper on Lynching

The first paper will be an approximately 1000-­word essay based on primary sources that address the issue of lynching at the turn of the twentieth century. Between 1880 and 1930, mobs in the United States lynched more than 4,600 people, and more than 3,300 of the victims were African Americans. You will interrogate the origins and dynamics of this violence through contemporary explanations of it. Your task is to use those sources to develop an argument about lynching in its historical context. Imagine your audience as intelligent readers craving new knowledge about the past, but unfamiliar with these documents. What can you tell them about the sources that will deepen their understanding of American history generally and of these events in particular?

Writing the Essay:

Success in course writing assignments will depend on careful research and clear writing.

  • Thesis and Introduction: A strong thesis goes beyond simply reporting what you found; it uses the evidence to broaden, qualify, or even contradict our understanding of an important theme in U.S. history. Your thesis may emerge gradually as you wrestle with your documents in early drafts. In your finished paper, however, feature your thesis in the introduction.
  • Working the Evidence: Most of a history essay should consist of “evidence paragraphs,” which develop and support the thesis with quotations or paraphrased material. Direct quotes or paraphrased material both require a citation.  Quote when you’ve made an assertion your reader is unlikely to accept without proof. After you quote, always explain: try to tease unforeseen implications out of the evidence; try to fend off a naysayer’s objection to your reading of the quotation. DO NOT use quotes longer than 3-4 lines. 
  • Structure: As your paragraphs begin to emerge from this process of working the evidence, unify each one with a topic sentence, and arrange them in a sequence that builds toward your strongest claims. Your finished essay should thus feature a clearly sign-posted order as it advances from the introduction through your body paragraphs and, finally, to your conclusion.
  • Style: Your essays should also be formal, clearly written, and free from spelling and grammatical mistakes.  Informal language, repetitive language, vague statements, 1st and 2nd person pronouns, and grammatical errors will result in grade reductions.  Proofread carefully.

Evaluating Developmental Milestones

Differentiating between a developmental delay and a learning preference is an important investigational skill early childhood teachers need to have in their tool belt. Professionally communicating this information to families is an integral part of the process. It can be difficult to communicate sensitive information with families, so it is best to be prepared prior to meeting.

For this assignment, imagine you are the teacher in a four-year-old preschool classroom, and you have three students whose behaviors concern you:

Billy is a four years and eight months old boy. He is the youngest of three at home and loves cars. You are noticing linguistically that Billy is still using one-word sentences. For example, when you asked him the other day which center he would like to go to, he responded enthusiastically “Block!” You probed for more information by asking why and he responded, “Fun!” You noticed these are typical responses for him.

Rasha is four years old and the youngest four-year-old in the class. She loves art and dancing. You wrote in your notes the other day that she goes to the art center every day and has not visited the outdoor center once. You also saw her trip on the playground when she was playing hopscotch.

Jordan is four years and six months old and he is capable of reading at an emergent reader level. You noticed that he does not like the block center and refuses to go to the paint center. During group work, he does not work well with the other students, sometimes yelling at them and refusing to share.

You are preparing for a meeting with the family of Billy, Rasha, or Jordan. Select one student and develop an action plan for the family in which you will discuss your observations and strategies that would help the student’s development.

For this assignment, compose a 500-750 word action plan that includes the following:

  • Identification of the specific academic or behavioral concern for Billy, Rasha, or Jordan.
  • Explanation if you think the academic or behavior concern is a delay in a milestone or a learning style preference, and justify your thought process. (Note: Teachers cannot diagnosis a disability.)
  • Description of two instructional strategies to support the child in the classroom.
  • Explanation of how you could collaborate with other professionals, including specialized experts, to support the student’s learning outcomes.
  • Description of two activities families can engage in with their child at home that would support the child’s development.
  • Description of how and when you will be communicating the student’s progress with the family.

Support your action plan with 2-3 scholarly references.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation at work or in your personal life that you wished were somehow different than it was? Did you know what steps to take to change the situation yourself? Did you know how to get the people around you all moving in the same direction, with urgency, to create the change you desired? Change is often crucial to long term success both in business and in life. Accomplishing change, however, is not always easy. Throughout the assignments in this course you will work through one specific example of the change process to help you master the steps of change.

Specific questions or items to address:

Select an organization in which you feel change is needed. The organization may be a current or previous employer, a school organization, military organization, or other group you may be a part of. Be sure you have adequate knowledge of the organization to complete the project.

Throughout the course you will be studying Kotter’s 8 Steps for change from Kotter and Cohen’s The Heart of Change. Each week you will build and expand on your final project for the course; a plan to implement change successfully. Your first goal is to identify the organization and change that is needed. Summarize the context of the organization, the change that is needed, why the change is needed, and why you feel the organization/situation is a good candidate for your final project.

Be sure to include at least three scholarly references to support your assertions written in your own words. Do not copy word for word from the course text or any other sources. Your submission this week is Part 1 of the final project.

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

Briefly summarize the change effort then identify at least two of the eight reasons for failure you feel contributed to the failure in your example. Step 1: Increase Urgency

We will move toward and become like that which we think about. This means we must prompt the individuals in the situation we are trying to change to begin thinking about and moving toward change. To do this successfully, we have to give them a reason! Most individuals are slow to take action when they have no motivation to do so. But how do we do that? And how do we accomplish not just motivation, but urgent motivation?

Specific questions or items to address:

Read Step 1 “Increase Urgency” from Kotter and Cohen’s The Heart of Change. Review the questions page in the exercise in step 1 to construct part of your project which addresses the need to create urgency. Use the list of questions in #1 of the exercise along with the feedback you received from your instructor to revise and improve Part 1 of your project.

Then use the questions in #2 and #3 to write Part 2 of your paper. You may also find the area under Increase Urgency helpful in reviewing the key points of what to do and not do when creating urgency for change. Be sure your paper touches on the key elements of each as they pertain to your organization.

Be sure to include at least three scholarly references to support your assertions written in your own words. Do not copy word for word from the course text or any other sources. Your submission this week is Part 2 of the final project.

However, when the sun is shining and everyone is relaxing on the deck with a good novel, it’s far more difficult to inspire them to put their books down and spring into action. So what can you do to lure your employees away from the sun and a good read to come help you facilitate change– when it likely looks to everyone else that things are perfectly good just the way they are?

Read “Leading Change When Business Is Good: An Interview with Samuel J. Palmisano” then think of a time in your professional life when everything seemed to be going very well. Identify one thing during that time that you could have improved from good to great. Identify the values present in your situation. Now how could you have used the five steps to successfully implement the change required to go from good to great? Explain what you would do in each step. In your opinion, are these five steps important? Why or why not? What role does communication play in these five steps? Use and cite a minimum of three scholarly references beyond the texts used in the course to defend your reasoning.

Step 2: Build the Team

Having the desire to change a situation on your own is often not sufficient to get the job done. More often than not, change requires the help of a team of individuals. Last week you learned about how to create urgency. So now you have the people around you motivated and ready to act. That’s a great start, but what comes next? Can everyone just dive in and get it done? More than likely it will take a bit more planning and coordination than that. You’ll need to create the right team and guide them in the right direction to accomplish the desired change successfully.

Read Step 2 “Build the Guiding Team” from Kotter and Cohen’s The Heart of Change. First, review the feedback from your instructor on Part 2 along with the discussion on urgency you had with your peers last week. Use any new information you gained from the discussion and feedback from your instructor to revise and improve Part 2 of your project.

Next, compile Part 3 of your project, explaining how you would build your team to address change in your organization. Explain how you would show enthusiasm and commitment to draw in the right team players, how you would model trust and teamwork, how you would structure the team, and how you will inject energy into the group. Be sure to touch on potential pitfalls in this step that you will avoid.
