When seeking to identify a patient’s health condition, advanced practice nurses can use a diverse selection of diagnostic tests and assessment tools; however, different factors affect the validity and reliability of the results produced by these tests or tools. Nurses must be aware of these factors in order to select the most appropriate test or tool and to accurately interpret the results.

Not only do these diagnostic tests affect adults, body measurements can provide a general picture of whether a child is receiving adequate nutrition or is at risk for health issues. These data, however, are just one aspect to be considered. Lifestyle, family history, and culture—among other factors—are also relevant. That said, gathering and communicating this information can be a delicate process.

For this Assignment, you will consider the validity and reliability of different assessment tools and diagnostic tests. You will explore issues such as sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. You will also consider examples of children with various weight issues. You will explore how you could effectively gather information and encourage parents and caregivers to be proactive about their children’s health and weight.

                                                     To Prepare

Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider      factors that impact the validity and reliability of various assessment      tools and diagnostic tests. You also will review examples of pediatric      patients and their families as it relates to BMI.

By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to one of      the following Assignment options by your Instructor: Adult Assessment      Tools, Diagnostic Tests, or Child Health Case. Based on the Assignment      option assigned to you, your Instructor will also assign you assessment      tools or diagnostic tests to apply to either an adult or the child health      example assigned to you. Note: Please see the “Course Announcements”      section of the classroom for your assignments from your Instructor.

Search the Walden Library and credible sources for      resources explaining the tool or test you were assigned. What is its      purpose, how is it conducted, and what information does it gather?

Also, as you search the Walden library and credible      sources, consider what the literature discusses regarding the validity,      reliability, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, ethical      dilemmas, and controversies related to the test or tool.

If you are assigned Assignment Option 2 (Child),      consider what health issues and risks may be relevant to the child in the      health example.

Based on the risks you identified, consider what       further information you would need to gain a full understanding of the       child’s health. Think about how you could gather this information in a       sensitive fashion.

Consider how you could encourage parents or caregivers       to be proactive toward the child’s health.

Taking into account the parents’ and caregivers’      potential sensitivities, list at least three specific questions you would      ask about the child to gather more information.

Provide at least two strategies you could employ to      encourage the parents or caregivers to be proactive about their child’s      health and weight.

What is a learner-centered teaching approach? Furthermore, how might you design a learner-centered lesson? Just as it sounds, learner-centered teaching approaches place the learner at the center of the lesson. Based in constructivism, this approach prompts learners to become active participants in their learning. Where traditional teaching approaches tend to place educators in a more omniscient role, learner-centered approaches require educators to scaffold student learning towards the achievement of learning objectives. Much like Glinda the Good Witch guided Dorothy on her journey home, so too should an educator guide learners through the examination of a new concept, skill, or process.

The ability to engage learners in this type of active learning is a crucial skill for nurse educators. Whether teaching nursing students, staff, or patients, educators must find an effective balance between the dissemination of information and hands-on, active learning. Doing so will not only benefit the learner but also the nurse educator.

To prepare

  • Reflect on the on-site learning environment. As a nurse educator, what type of classroom management concerns might you have about teaching in on-site situations?
  • Review this week’s readings on classroom management strategies. What does classroom management look like in the on-site environment? How might nurse educators employ strategies throughout their lessons to decrease classroom management concerns?

Purpose 

The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student an opportunity to explore the roles and competencies of the advanced practice nurse (APN). 

Activity Learning Outcomes

Due Date:  

Assignment should be submitted to the Week 2 Roles in Advanced Practice Nursing dropbox by Sunday 11:59 p.m. MST at the end of Week 2. When the assignment is placed in the dropbox, it will automatically be submitted to Turnitin. You may submit the assignment one additional time before the due date to lower the Turnitin score. If you choose to resubmit, the second submission will be considered final and subject to grading.  Once the due date for the assignment passes, you may not resubmit to lower a Turnitin score.

Peer Discussion:

The enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) provided nurses with newer opportunities in delivering care and also being part of the reforms occurring in the healthcare industry. Nurses are required to do more in their roles in ensuring better patient outcomes and low-cost care is realized (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). To better understand the roles of nurses’ practitioners and the impact they have in the process of healthcare reforms, several issues can be addressed.

Expansion of the scope nurses practice will allow them to fully practice in their education and also get the licenses to operate in various states. This will ensure that nurses will work with physicians and provide cost-effective care thus addressing the issues of shortages in primary health care. Nurses will thus use the opportunity to give their services and practice what they have been trained to do. At the same time, it will help redefine their competences and thus have the ability to meet the health demand in an increasingly diverse society (YouTube, n.d.). Through improved practices, they can focus on quality and safe services. Nurses should also have the ability to cater to a culturally diverse population and this will reduce the health disparities realized in the US.

Use of technology should be embraced to ensure there is on-time delivery of services. Use of technology goes a long way in bringing forth quality care to patients. They also help the nurse make informed decisions since they can easily track the medical history of the patient. Technology, when used appropriately, can be used to provide solutions and improve patient care. Nurses are engaged daily with patients and they come into contact with patients and thus they should be included in the process of making healthcare delivery better. Nurses need more leadership positions as they are the healthcare professionals actively dealing with patients (Sohpia, 2015). Nursing reforms and inclusions in the health reforms will in a huge way and thus ensure better health outcomes.
