As a social worker, often you need to use your policy advocacy skills to ensure that your clients are receiving the services that they need. Although you may tend to think of policy advocacy skills as separate from your clinical social work skills, they are very similar. Think of the skills that you would use in working with a client such as Jake Levy. How could you apply these skills to policy advocacy? How will you use these skills to identify the policy and social problems that are impacting these families? In this week’s Discussion, you will continue to follow the Levy, Bradley, Petrakis, and Cortez families to start the process of policy advocacy.

Module 4 Case Study “Who’s Values: The Politics of Planning”

Summary:

Jennifer aspired to become Executive Director of her mental health center where she worked. She had recently been asked to staff a committee charged with planning for community based services and was excited to incorporate more advocacy, empowerment, and prevention programs. They appointed a board to help with these new services which was much more conservative than Jennifer had hoped. The chair of the board completely ignored her proposals and stated that the role of the paid staff was not to push their philosophy, but to help the new board implement whatever programs the board developed. As the meeting progressed it became clear that the board wanted to hire an Executive Director with project management skills, not a human services degree. Now that her professional philosophy and goals have been discounted she does not know what to do.

You must decide what she should do next and determine whether the role of paid committee staff is to push the philosophy they feel is best or to carry out the wishes of the committee, even if they do not agree philosophically with those wishes.

• Step 2: Submit a 2-4-page paper that analyzes ethics and values. Answer the questions at the end of Case 15 (pages 97 and 98) in essay form. Utilize a minimum of two scholarly sources and two ethical standards from the Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals ethical code to support your response.

You are to write about the readings in week 4 & 5.  Which means, the essay has two parts with each part focusing on one week to answer the following: 

Week 4 addresses:  The transition in agricultural production and how that affects human values in rural communities   

Week 5 addresses:  The role of women in agricultural farming

   In the first column, list three cultures you are a part of or that you identify strongly with, and rank them from most to least significant in your life. These can be national, ethnic, religious, regional, or local, and they can include subcultures or groups related to your personal interests.
2. In the second column, identify one representative object for each of the cultures you identify with on your list.
3. In a few words, explain how the cultural object reflects the culture in which it exists. Consider which aspects of culture have relevance for each artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on.

Week 2 Forum: Share Project Plan: Task Definition and Information Seeking Strategies 

In the Week 1 and Week 2 lessons, you have read about two steps of the Big 6 model: task definition and information seeking strategies. As you consider the Field of Study Project, complete a project plan and source possibilities. Please read the entire discussion forum directions before completing this forum.

Part I:

First, click on the Assignment tab to review the instructions for the Field of Study Project. Once you have reviewed the instructions, proceed with this week’s forum topic.

Any good project has a plan that helps you meet your goal. With that in mind, what are some steps to take to create your plan? How will you get your mind flowing for ideas for the project plan?

The goal is to create a project plan for the Field of Study Project. The steps of project planning may include:

· Understanding the scope and value of the project

· Planning a method to communicate the plan

· Selecting a topic/theme

· Considering critical thinking questions/statements to research

· Selecting subtopics which relate to the questions

· Brainstorming new ideas that should be included in the plan

Next, choose a career interest topic which is realistic and one that you are actually interested in learning more about. The career interest might be a field in which you could become employed after completing your APUS degree program or additional training.

After choosing your career interest topic, complete your project plan. Here are some ways you can create your plan: make an outline, mind map, flow chart, matrix, paragraph(s), or graphic organizer in order to share your project plan. Your project plan should include topic choice, your plan, why you chose your topic and what new information you are excited about learning in your research. Keep in mind that a robust project plan will make your research and project construction easier.

Part II:

This is a reflective paragraph that represents your critical thinking process when thinking about possible sources. You are NOT looking for specific sources now. Consider the best possible sources as presented in the Week 2 Lesson. What type of sources will work best for your research? How can you support your project plan with credible, current, reliable, accurate, and relevant information?

Part III:

Submit Parts I and II into the text box of the forum (not as an attachment) to share with your classmates. If you use Word, copy your document and paste the document into the forum by using the Word icon on the toolbar. If your project plan includes a URL, then copy and paste the link into the textbox.

Then, respond within the discussion forum, substantially, throughout the week.
