Criminal Investigation

Seven individuals have come to various emergency rooms in the city (Bayside Hospital, Valley Hospital, and Kennedy Hospital). Most have reported being tired and weak. Four individuals went to Bayside Hospital (Screech, Jessie, Kelly, Lisa, and AC), each presenting with nausea and vomiting for the past couple days, as well as diarrhea. Kelly has also had headaches and muscle aches.

Ms. Bliss went to Kennedy Hospital complaining of coughing (sometimes with blood and mucus) and muscle aches.

Mr. Belding and Zack went to Valley Hospital, both suffering chest pain and shortness of breath, in addition to fatigue and coughing.

All of these individuals had reported attending a 1990’s Television Star Conference at the Max Hotel in Los Angeles and that this conference ended one full week ago.

Number of attendees at the conference: 1,000

Guest capacity of Max Hotel: 450

Number of attendees staying at Max Hotel: 150 (Lisa, Kelly, and Richard stayed at Max Hotel)

Ms. Bliss, Zack, Screech, and AC stayed at the Malibu Sands Beach Club, a ten minute walk from the Max Hotel.

Conference attendees were from all over the world.

Local public health authorities, including epidemiologists (you!) have been called to investigate

Q1. List all questions you would ask the patient(s). Then, state why you are asking these questions.

Q2.What must you do to get in touch with the other conference attendees?

Who else do you interview and why? What questions do you ask them? List them all as bullets.

Q3. Is the hotel a possible source of the mysterious illness? How so? What must you investigate and why? Given what you plan to investigate, what new, if any questions, must you ask the patients and other attendees?

Q4.What must you do to get in touch with the other hotel guests? Is there an alternative to interviewing the other 300 non-conference, hotel guests? If so, what is your plan of action? Do you need to close the hotel? If so, why? What will you do with the hotel guests? Be specific and thorough.

Q5.For the healthcare providers in this class (e.g. residents, nurses), what tests would you run on the patients and why?

Q.6what do you think is the disease culprit here and why?

Q.7How would each case be treated? If they are not treated, what is/are the possible outcomes?

Q.8 What recommendations must be made to the general public, as well as those hotel guests and conference attendees?

Instructions

See the general instructions in the Essay Discussion Instructions section of the course menu. Once you choose which question you’d like to write about, write your essay and post it in the discussion board and also save it as a Word document.

To create your post, click the blue Create Thread button. To be able to read and respond to others’ posts, you will first need to publish your own post. Your first post is the one that will be graded–a blank post WILL be graded if it is your first post in the board. You can save your post as a draft, but it will not be published for students to view, nor will it be queued for grading until you click the Submit button.

When you refresh the board, after you publish your post, it will allow you to view everyone’s posts. If you hover your cursor at the bottom of a post, the button to reply to that student’s post will appear.

Use your course texts to help you respond to the topic, and when you quote and summarize from the course texts, include information about the page reference.

You are discouraged from using additional sources. If you do choose to use an outside source, be sure to cite your source, just as you do when you use the course texts. If you use a quotation or an example from a website, cite the website’surl and the date accessed.

Once you are ready for your classmates to read it, post the thread containing your essay. Then go to the TurnItIn dropbox section here in Blackboard and post your Word document into the dropbox. You do not need to include your response to another student in the file that you upload to TurnItIn.

Finally, read your classmates’ posts. A complete assignment includes your written responseto at least one essay besides your own–part of your score is based on your reply to at least one of your classmate’s posts. It should be a meaningful reply that continues the discussion, points out something good about the post, and makes a constructive suggestion for improvement.

Topics for your Essay, Choose A or B

Essay Length tips–To answer these topics completely, it takes about 500-600 words (required). Use the topic questions and the scoring rubric to see if your draft responds fully to all parts of the question. A complete thoughtful answer is more important than word count.

Topic A: What is the fallacy of Straw Man? How is it different than simply disagreeing with someone else’s point of view?

Use the material in Vaughn’s book to help you give a detailed explanation of what the mistake in a Straw Man is. To demonstrate your understanding and to teach the idea to the rest of the class, provide a relevant real-life example of the logical mistake. (You MAY use an outside source to help you present your example; be sure to summarize or paraphrase, cite, and use announcing verbs.) Choose carefully – consider whether your example does a good job of illustrating a Straw Man. Compare it to similar fallacies, and show why your example is a Straw Man rather than another fallacy like an Appeal to the Person. Your discussion of your example should be detailed so that readers can evaluate the fallacy. Argue the case for why your example is an example of Straw Man.

Topic B: Is it morally permissible to believe in God just because it is to your practical advantage to believe? Why or why not? Use the material in Vaughn’s book to help you explain how Pascal argues for belief in God. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of other thinkers have identified in his reasoning.

What does the argument against believing in God without sufficient evidence look like? Is it plausible that God would look kindly on atheists and agnostics to because they refuse to believe without evidence? After all, aren’t they simply using God’s gift of reason to arrive at their decision?

Analysis of Development Theories

Assignment:

Competent social workers are able to construct a strong foundation upon which to build skills by understanding theories from a variety of disciplines. The disciplines of psychology, education, and sociology offer a number of development theories that can easily be applied to the practice of social work. For this Assignment, consider how a theory from another discipline may shed light on social work practice with children and adolescents.

By Day 7

Submit a 2- to 4-page paper in which you choose a theory of development from another discipline (refer to Erikson, Piaget, Freud etc.). In your analysis, be sure to address how the theory does or does not relate to social work practice. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.

Submission and Grading Information

To submit your completed Assignment for review and grading, do the following:

  • Please save your Assignment using the naming convention “WK3Assgn+last name+first initial.(extension)” as the name.

Cultural Communication

1. Think of your own experience in working to understand a language or cultural behavior that is different from yours. Do you tend to take an etic or emic approach? What about a balanced approach? Explain. (For this, you might consider the subtle issues of sound categories and ask yourself how your pronunciation of another language might have been hampered by assumptions you made from taking an etic perspective.)

2. Context is central to how language is made meaningful. Draw on at least one factor from the S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G model to bring some ethnographic insight into a misunderstanding or miscommunication that you’ve been a party to. Be sure to provide sufficient background of the event as well as details about how you are using the S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G model to interpret the event.

3. Watch the “Armstrong BBC Interview, 2014” video and use the the “Jefferson transcription conventions” as you organize these words into a transcript. (You may have to add a few words or sounds, and you will definitely need to add other detail. Do your best with the formatting. Aim for the same organization, conventions, and amount of detail as mine.) Your transcript should contain the following words:

  • “that’s the honest answer yeah that’s the honest answer but it’s an answer that needs some explanation and it I mean I look at everything when I made that decision when my teammates made that decision when the whole Peloton made that decision like let’s we get it it was a bad decision at an imperfect time but it happened when Lance Armstrong did that I know what happened because of that”

4. Build on (or critique) my analysis of Lance Armstrong by observing what happens next, which is in the “Armstrong BBC Interview, 2014” video.  Lance uses specific linguistic strategies to persuade the audience that he is more of a victim than a cheater.

Here is a question that you can use to guide your observation:

  • Why does Lance suddenly use the third person to refer to himself on multiple occasions? That is, for example, why does he say, “when Lance Armstrong did that …”?

Discussion

Medical social work has expanded far beyond the  walls of hospitals. Medical social work is now practiced in myriad  settings, including inpatient hospital units, hospital-based outpatient  clinics, community-based medical clinics, mobile medical facilities,  public health organizations, nursing homes, and hospice facilities. The  types of treatment and modalities used by medical social workers are  dictated by the health care settings in which they practice, the mission  of the facility, the policies that govern the facility, and the  individual patient’s needs.

To prepare for this Discussion,  consider the role of the medical social worker in different health care  settings. Think about a health care setting (such as a chronic care  hospital, specialty hospital, public health department, or rural  hospital) that is appealing to you.

By Day 3

Post a brief description of the  health care setting you selected. Describe the patient population(s)  served at the setting. Explain how the medical social worker functions  in this health care setting. Identify factors about the health care  setting that might challenge the medical social worker. Explain why.  Explain ways you might address the challenges.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific  references to the resources and the current literature using appropriate  APA format and style.

Discussion

For this Discussion, you view an initial suicide  risk assessment. As you evaluate the social worker’s actions, imagine  yourself in their place. What would you do, and why?

To prepare:

  • Explore an evidence-based tool about suicide risk assessment and  safety planning. See the Week 3 document Suggested Further Reading for  SOCW 6090 (PDF) for a list of resources to review.
  • Watch the “Suicide Assessment Interview” segment in the  Sommers-Flanagan (2014) video to assess how it compares to your  findings.
  • Access the Walden Library to research scholarly resources related to suicide and Native American populations.

Post a response in which you address the following:

  • Identify elements of Dr. Sommers-Flanagan’s suicide risk assessment.
  • Describe any personal emotional responses you would have to Tommi’s  revelations and reflect on reasons you might experience these emotions.
  • Describe the elements of safety planning that you would put in  place as Tommi’s social worker in the first week and in the first  months.
  • Identify a suicide risk assessment tool you would use at future  sessions to identify changes in her risk level. Explain why you would  use this tool.
  • Explain any adjustments or enhancements that might be helpful given  Tommi’s cultural background. Support your ideas with scholarly  resources.

Diagnostic Summary and MSE

Before moving through diagnostic decision  making, a social worker needs to conduct an interview that builds on a  biopsychosocial assessment. New parts are added that clarify the timing,  nature, and sequence of symptoms in the diagnostic interview. The  Mental Status Exam (MSE) is a part of that process.

The MSE is designed to systematically help  diagnosticians recognize patterns or syndromes of a person’s cognitive  functioning. It includes very particular, direct observations about  affect and other signs of which the client might not be directly aware.

When the diagnostic interview is complete, the  diagnostician has far more detail about the fluctuations and history of  symptoms the patient self-reports, along with the direct observations of  the MSE. This combination greatly improves the chances of accurate  diagnosis. Conducting the MSE and other special diagnostic elements in a  structured but client-sensitive manner supports that goal. In this  Assignment, you take on the role of a social worker conducting an MSE.

To prepare:

  • Watch the video describing an MSE. Then watch the Sommers-Flanagan  (2014) “Mental Status Exam” video clip. Make sure to take notes on the  nine domains of the interview.
  • Review the Morrison (2014) reading on the elements of a diagnostic interview.
  • Review the 9 Areas to evaluate for a Mental Status Exam and example  diagnostic summary write-up provided in this Week’s resources.
  • Review the case example of a diagnostic summary write-up provided in this Week’s resources.
  • Write up a Diagnostic Summary including the Mental Status Exam for Carl based upon his interview with Dr. Sommers-Flanagan.

By Day 7

Submit a 2- to 3-page case presentation paper in which you complete both parts outlined below:

Part I: Diagnostic Summary and MSE

Provide a diagnostic summary of the client, Carl. Within this summary include:

  • Identifying Data/Client demographics
  • Chief complaint/Presenting Problem
  • Present illness
  • Past psychiatric illness
  • Substance use history
  • Past medical history
  • Family history
  • Mental Status Exam (Be professional and concise for all nine areas)
    • Appearance
    • Behavior or psychomotor activity
    • Attitudes toward the interviewer or examiner
    • Affect and mood
    • Speech and thought
    • Perceptual disturbances
    • Orientation and consciousness
    • Memory and intelligence
    • Reliability, judgment, and insight

Part II: Analysis of MSE

After completing Part I of the Assignment,  provide an analysis and demonstrate critical thought (supported by  references) in your response to the following:

  • Identify any areas in your MSE that require follow-up data collection.
  • Explain how using the cross-cutting measure would add to the information gathered.
  • Do Carl’s answers add to your ability to diagnose him in any specific way? Why or why not?
  • Would you discuss a possible diagnosis with Carl at time point in time? Why?

Support Part II with citations/references. The DSM 5 and case study do not

need to be cited.  Utilize the other course readings to support your response.

Online Discrimination

This week you will observe social media websites and look for discriminatory comments from online users. You will then reflect on the comments and write a blog post about the various forms of discrimination observed online.

Select two social media websites to observe (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are a few of the popular social media websites).

Choose a topic to research, and read the comments or describe the visual posts/photos from the websites you have chosen. If possible, select a website that includes postings that appear to be from somewhere other than the United States. Topics about politics, cultural diversity, and current events are great selections from which to choose.

Write a 1,050 word blog post about online discrimination on social media websites.

Include the following in your blog:

  • What were some forms of discrimination you witnessed in the comments? Indicate what you think triggered the discriminatory comments and decipher which cultural dynamics might be informing these. How did other online users react to the discriminatory comments and which cultural dynamics are more than likely informing these responses?
  • Because social media websites can be accessed internationally, conjecture as to how these inter- and or multi-cultural postings might be interpreted by someone from another culture. Continue your conjecture and deduce the communication needs that these possible inter- or multi-cultural postings potentially uncover.
  • Provide at least three examples of the discriminatory comments you read, and explain the ramifications of what must be “learned” communication to multicultural sensitivity. How could interdisciplinary education and cultural awareness improve these communications?
  • How would you respond to negative comments if they were directed toward you? Ethically defend what would be your reaction. Using persuasion, discuss how online users can promote positive language in online communication.

Criminology Research

1. The authors (Gongaware and Dotter) presented an usual thought as they attempted to connect or explain the development of a “criminal self,” using Mead’s development of self (role taking, gaming and generalized others) and Sutherland’s differential association.  What idea or statement from the article provides (for you) the best insight into how these two theories connected can produce an explanation for the development of the “criminal self?”

2. After reading the article take the following statement and explain why either a “criminal self” or a non-criminal self may be developed (use the following statement to explain this idea: “… while the number of contacts is important, it is the quality of the interactions, and the internal process of translating those contacts into behaviors through the self, which makes the [the contacts] important” (Gongaware and Dotter, 2005, p. 396).
