UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT OF THE PROBLEM

Module 2 – Case

Assignment Overview

Having selected the environmental/occupational health, global health security, health education, or public health problem you wish to examine for your integrative project, and having received approval to pursue this problem as your topic, you will now consider this problem within its broader context. The conceptual model that follows should be used as a guide in identifying the determinants or factors that contribute to the observed problem. Hint: When reviewing this model, begin at the individual level rather than the local, regional, or global levels, and work outward to identify relevant contextual factors.

Access a copy of the report that presents and explains this model in detail. Refer in particular to Section 1.2 (pp. 18-19) of this document.

Globalization and Social Determinants of Health: Conceptual Model

Source: World Health Organization, Globalization Knowledge Network (2007). Towards health-equitable globalisation: Rights, regulation and redistribution; Final report to the Commission on Social Determinants of Health.

Illustrate the risk assessment and risk management process in relation to an environmental health problem.

Instructions:

Create a brochure that informs local residents about the hazards at either a National Priorities List (Superfund) site or sanitary landfill in your community. The brochure should include the following:

  • Front matter with a title and byline
  • Inside and back panels:
    • Information about the site (location, previous use, current use, etc.)
    • Risk Assessment:
      • Site assessments and testing completed to determine contamination levels.
      • The hazardous agents present at the site.
      • The extent of the contamination at the site and where it has spread to the surrounding community, if applicable (water, soil, air, etc.).
      • How the site has negatively impacted the environment and the health of people in the surrounding community (if negative health effects have not been reported, list the potential health effects based on the matrices that have been contaminated and the hazardous agents that have been identified).
    • Risk Management:
      • Identify the clean-up or containment measures that were taken.
      • Discuss how the site is continually monitored to prevent future contamination and protect the health of the surrounding population.
  • Back matter with references and contact information for the local health or environmental department (city/county/state)

Population Pyramids

Population pyramids show the age structure of the population of a country or region. Different growth patterns caused by varying cultural values, war events or both help shape the pyramid. You will obtain the data (population pyramids) from https://www.census.gov/data-tools/demo/idb/informationGateway.php for three different countries. Once you’re at the site, you will need to locate the three countries of Ethiopia, Indonesia and UK:

  1. Click the drop-down menu under Select Report, and choose the last option “Population Pyramid Graph
  2. Under the Select one or More Countries area, hold down your control button and choose Ethiopia, Indonesia and the United Kingdom
  3. Leave all other selections as entered and click the Submit button at the bottom

Analyze the data: Each of the three countries will produce a population pattern that may be recognized as rapid growth, stable growth or growth decline. After you obtain the pyramids following the directions above, copy and paste them into your assignment and then identify which of the three patterns each country demonstrates.

Write a supporting essay: Please write a brief essay comparing the three pyramids. Consider historical events, the present global population structure and the influence, if any, of the past and the present on future population growth. Compare and contrast these pyramids. Which country will have the greatest population increase? Why? What problems might these countries be facing? You may use additional information from library sources or the Internet. Please cite any outside sources used to prepare your essay and provide a “References Cited” section at the end of your assignment.

Format: Your paper should be 3-5 pages long (excluding figures and references), double-spaced, 1-inch margins all around, and 12-pt font (Times New Roman or similar).

Environmental Regulations

There are several environmental laws, regulations, and policies that currently influence your life, and they include the following:

  • The Clean Air Act

Choose one of these environmental regulations, or another policy that interests you; then, research your chosen regulation or policy’s requirements and environmental and economic impacts. Remember that the Strayer Library is a good place to start. http://research.strayer.edu

Write a 3–5-page paper in which you do the following:

  1. Describe three key elements of the regulation or policy you chose. Specifically, discuss who is affected and what actions they are required to undertake, including federal and state agencies and specific industries, and how these requirements are enforced.
  2. Assess three effects this regulation or policy had on our environment. Next, quantify its effects, if possible, to analyze whether or not the regulation had the desired effect on the environment.
  3. Discuss three economic effects of your chosen policy or regulation. Next, describe the direct costs of implementation, as well as the effect the regulation has had on economic growth. If possible, find a benefits/cost analysis that will provide you with objective analyses of this regulation’s economic impact.
  4. Speculate whether or not you believe that this policy or regulation has been successful overall. Next, debate whether or not your chosen policy or regulation has promoted environmental benefits or outweighed its economic costs. Lastly, determine whether you would recommend renewing this policy or regulation when it comes to its expiration date, or whether you should let the policy or regulation expire. Justify your response.
  5. Use at least 7 (7) quality resources/references in this assignment, in addition to the course text. Note: Wikipedia and personal blogs do not qualify as quality resources.
  6. Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
    • This course requires the use of new Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
    • Be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with 1-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow SWS format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
    • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, your professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

  7. The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are as follows:
  • Analyze the negative and positive impacts of human interaction with a specified ecosystem.
  • Determine the fundamental principles of ecosystems and ecology.
  • Assess the impact and effectiveness of environmental conservation methods and policy .
