Course Objective: Evaluate the effects of constitutional provisions on business.

Prompt: Consider the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. case in your required readings. What are the constitutional implications on business exemplified by this case? Which constitutional provisions were at issue? Hobby Lobby Stores is a family owned business. Do you think this made a difference in the court’s consideration of Hobby Lobby’s religious freedom argument? Would the same argument work for a large publicly held corporation like IBM?  Should it? If not, why is there a constitutional distinction? Finally, the article by Kelsey Dallas (also in your readings) posits that the Hobby Lobby case has both hurt and helped religious freedom. How so? Do you agree? Should a business be able to invoke the 1st Amendment protection at all? (For this last question you might want to take a look at the Supreme Court’s opinion in the Citizens United case.)

Please clearly and thoroughly discuss these questions in a well-organized post and utilize research sources in support of your essay.

Ethical Considerations

A strategic plan is a document used to structure and communicate organizational goals. It is also used to mitigate risks and alleviate the potential for legal cases. Barbara receives information that there is an additional, more pressing issue at a satellite clinic that is not documented in the original UCCO case. This issue relates to the emergency care clinic, which is used to treat patients with trauma-related injuries. The clinic has been over-utilized for the past year, resulting in stressed staffing, overwhelming costs, and decreasing quality of patient care and customer satisfaction. Staff productivity is affected by use of personal cell phones and clinic equipment is often used for social media.

In one particular case, a 13-year old patient was seen for trauma care by the UCCO Emergency Clinic. The patient’s parents make it clear to the staff that they are not willing to give consent to any procedure involving blood products or transfusion. The risks are explained to the parents. The patient arrived unconscious but shortly regains consciousness. After the parents leave the room, the patient tells the nurse that she is afraid of dying and would like any care, including blood procedures and products, to save her life. The nurse later finds out that the rejection by the parents was due to religious reasons. The nurse quickly discusses the case with fellow employees, one of which posts comments on her social media page using a clinic-owned computer. The nursing director give a verbal warning to all involved nurses and staff.

search for a minimum of 3 articles covering the topics of ethics, healthcare professionalism, and federal legislations.

Using your research, address the following points in a minimum of 3-page report:

  • Was the nursing manager legally compliant with to protect patient information? Explain the legal risks and support with federal legislations and professional expectations, such as HIPAA and professional codes of ethics.
  • What bearing does the age and religious requests have on the patient’s case? Are there medical and ethical laws that supersede the parent’s requests?
  • What is the role and importance of communication among UCCO facilities, particularly in reference to compliance and ethical standards?
  • What are the ethical and professional factors of using social media?
  • Were the reactions to the patient’s case illegal, or just unethical? How does this align with UCCO’s mission, values, and strategic action plans? How does it compare to your own personal beliefs and values?

Exam One

Late submissions will be accepted, but late policies apply. See the course syllabus for exact details.

Question:

Compare and contrast the following gods and goddesses:

Aruru, Ishtar, Anu, Siduri, Tammuz, Enlil, Ereshkigal, and Shamash

For exam one: you need to compare and contrast all 8. You don’t have to write a lot about each one, and sometimes students will put those that are helpful god/goddesses into one category, and the others into the other category, and then compare and contrast that way.

I don’t have a specific way for you to complete the exam as I expect you have written a compare/contrast essay before; therefore, I leave the organization up to the students, but I would like for you to include all 8 in the response.

Hope this helps. Thanks, Dr. Forbess

English 1302 critical analysis

Choose an essay (I have one on Social Media if you want to use it), and follow the critical analysis model I have attached below.

Actions

The purpose for writing a critique is to evaluate somebody’s work (a book, an essay, a movie, a painting…) in order to increase the reader’s understanding of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing because it expresses the writer’s opinion or evaluation of a text. Analysis means to break down and study the parts. Writing a critical paper requires two steps: critical reading and critical writing.

Critical reading:

  1. Identify the author’s thesis and purpose
  2. Analyze the structure of the passage by identifying all main ideas
  3. Consult a dictionary or encyclopedia to understand material that is unfamiliar to you
  4. Make an outline of the work or write a description of it
  5. Write a summary of the work
  6. Determine the purpose which could be
    • To inform with factual material
    • To persuade with appeal to reason or emotions
    • To entertain (to affect people’s emotions)
  7. Evaluate the means by which the author has accomplished his purpose
  • If the purpose is to inform, has the material been presented clearly, accurately, with order and coherence?
  • If the purpose is to persuade, look for evidence, logical reasoning, contrary evidence
  • If the purpose was to entertain, determine how emotions are affected: does it make you laugh, cry, angry? Why did it affect you?

Consider the following questions: How is the material organized? Who is the intended audience? What are the writer’s assumptions about the audience? What kind of language and imagery does the author use?

SAMPLE OUTLINE FOR CRITICAL ESSAY

After the passage under analysis has been carefully studied, the critique can be drafted using this sample outline.

  • I. Background information to help your readers understand the nature of the work
    • A. Information about the work
      • 1. Title
      • 2. Author
      • 3. Publication information
      • 4. Statement of topic and purpose
    • B. Thesis statement indicating writer’s main reaction to the work
  • II. Summary or description of the work
  • III. Interpretation and/or evaluation
    • A. Discussion of the work’s organization
    • B. Discussion of the work’s style
    • C. Effectiveness
    • D. Discussion of the topic’s treatment
    • E. Discussion of appeal to a particular audience

Remember:

Avoid introducing your ideas by stating “I think” or “in my opinion.” Keep the focus on the subject of your analysis, not on yourself. Identifying your opinions weakens them.

Always introduce the work. Do not assume that because your reader knows what you are writing about, you do not need to mention the work’s title.

Other questions to consider: Is there a controversy surrounding either the passage or the subject which it concerns?

What about the subject matter is of current interest?

What is the overall value of the passage?

What are its strengths and weaknesses?

Support your thesis with detailed evidence from the text examined. Do not forget to document quotes and paraphrases.

Remember that the purpose of a critical analysis is not merely to inform, but also to evaluate the worth, utility, excellence, distinction, truth, validity, beauty, or goodness of something.

Even though as a writer you set the standards, you should be open-minded, well informed, and fair. You can express your opinions, but you should also back them up with evidence.

Your review should provide information, interpretation, and evaluation. The information will help your reader understand the nature of the work under analysis. The interpretation will explain the meaning of the work, therefore requiring your correct understanding of it. The evaluation will discuss your opinions of the work and present valid justification for them.
