Week 2 Short Research Paper

Each student will write a short research paper for a peer-reviewed research paper that pertains to the week’s assigned reading.  This will be a detailed summary of the research paper and what you gained from the research.  Each week, you will find an article/peer-reviewed research paper that pertains to the week’s assignment.  If you have a difficult time, Google Scholar is a wonderful location to find these types of articles:

https://scholar.google.com/

Once you find the article, you will simply read it and then write a review of it.  Think of it as an article review where you submit a short overview of the article.

*All outside sources must be referenced and cited in your paper.  All papers will be reviewed with a plagiarism software. Any references not properly referenced and cited will result in a 0 on your paper. Multiple violations will result in a failure for the course!

Ethical Dilemma

Amanda, a counselor in a public high school, decides to start a “relationship skills” group for juniors and seniors. She posts an advertisement for the group in the school counseling office.  Her advertisement provides minimal information including the name of the group, the date and time of the first meeting and the school counseling office secretary is listed as the contact. Amanda instructs the secretary for the counseling office to admit the first nine students who call to enroll. The secretary adds students to the group as they call in irrespective of the nature of their problems, their personal goals for the group or previous experience with group.

At the first meeting, nine students show up including seven females and two males.  Having never talked with or met the students before, Amanda begins by asking them to share why they have come to the group. One of the males, Paul, shares that he was new to the high school this year, and had just been released from a detention center after serving one year for domestic violence. Paul states that he has “anger issues” especially directed at “women”.  At break, five of the females leave and do not return to the group. Paul breaks down in the group and states that he is going to kill himself when he gets home.

Week 2 Discussion 1&2

Discussion 1

Janet has been seen by you for treatment of depression. On intake, she disclosed that she was in AA and had been sober for 6 months. Janet seems to be happy with her progress, but after a few sessions, she seems to be noncommunicative and upset. After six sessions, she discontinues therapy with you. You learn that she has engaged another counselor who treats alcohol use and co-occurring disorders. This morning you received notice from your licensing board that Janet filed a complaint against you alleging that you attempted to treat Janet’s addiction to alcohol and that you did not have the expertise necessary to do so. You are a Licensed professional counselor but you have not obtained training in addictions. Based on this information, answer the following questions:

  1. Does Janet have a valid complaint? Why or why not?
  2. How would you respond to the Licensing board complaint?
  3. How would you avoid this type of complaint in the future?

This discussion question meets the following NASAC Standards:

The American Counseling Association as well as individual state counseling associations (i.e., ICA, AzCA) provide a variety of resources to clinicians. Choose either the ACA or your state’s counseling association. What are its member benefits, activities, services to members, and current issue?
