Intercultural Communication Paper (25 points) Outcome 3

This assignment allows you to demonstrate mastery of outcome # 2:

Recognize and respond constructively to cultural differences in communication

It consists of two parts:

Part 1:

Complete the INCA survey and develop a  one-page reflection summarizing your results. (Include your  Intercultural Competence Scoresheet)

Part 2:

Select 3 critical incidents and  analyze them. Frame your analyses of each incident using the cultural  dimensions studied in class. (In other words, identify which cultural  dimensions or values are influencing the situation). Each analysis  should contain at least 3 scholarly references from the course materials that pertain directly to the incident. Your  analysis should be complete and supported by the literature, not an  opinion. You will be evaluated on how well you can form an argument,  that is, present a statement and support it with credible sources.

Complete both parts in a formal  written paper using APA format. Use headings to mark each part: Part 1  and Part 2. Use subheadings to indicate the discussion of each critical  incident. Please review the requirements for all written assignments on  page 3 of the syllabus.

INCA is an acronym for Intercultural Competency Assessment.  The purpose of the INCA survey is for you to examine your intercultural  awareness and assess your cultural sensitivity. This activity is  designed to help you become aware of your own attitude towards cultural  diversity. The dimensions of cultural competence measured by the INCA  survey are:1) Tolerance of ambiguity, 2) Behavioral flexibility, 3)  Communicative awareness, 4) Knowledge discovery, 5) Respect for  Otherness, and 6) Empathy.

NOTE:  This project and the instrument created was funded by the Council of  Europe and the Leonardo da Vinci II Program.  You can read more about  this project, if you are interested, here:

http://ec.europa.eu/ewsi/en/resources/detail.cfm?ID_ITEMS=9372

Directions: Complete  all of the INCA Survey questions. When you are done, use the INCA  survey key to help you analyze your results. Read about the different  dimensions of intercultural competency and what they mean.

Note  that a total score for the INCA survey is not important for the purpose  of this assignment.  (You will not get a total score).

Unit 6

Imagine that you are a case manager in Lake County, CA in a jail working with both males and females clients, with children and families, who have been incarcerated for at least five years. For the purpose of this assignment you may assume that many of the clients may need assistance with substance abuse, mental health, transportation, employment, and family services, among others. Work together with your coworkers (classmates) to create a community service delivery plan to serve your clients’ needs so that they are prepared to be self-sufficient upon release.

For your primary post, respond to the following questions:

1. Identify at least three specific needs and services that your clients have as they prepare to leave jail and transition back into the community. Take into consideration the demographics of the area and the needs of this population.

2. Conduct research to locate names of at least three appropriate community resources (agencies, programs and services) that will serve the needs of your clients. (You may need to locate resources in surrounding areas, online, or develop a task force or focus group to develop new services and programs if they don’t already exist in the community).

3. Decide how clients will access these services. (You can be creative—human service professionals are always trading services with each other.)

Must be at least 300 words with an in-text citation.

Discussion

You presented a good analysis for this “Driveway Tax” case study from  Mission, Kansas.  When I read through the case study there were a  couple of things I noted that the local government did, that, if they  had been adaptive leaders, they may have been able to be more successful  with the tax.

You stated that the local government did not exercise self-management  leading to the next competency of not properly being able to properly  facilitate the intervention.  Knowing what you know about adaptive  leadership and through the research you conducted for this week and in  week 2, if you were a consultant to the local government in Mission,  Kansas during this time, what suggestions/recommendations would you have  provided to aid them in achieving a different outcome?

Adaptive Leadership Notes

The premise of leadership as an adaptive challenge versus a technical  fix is an approach promoted by Heifetz (1994) and Heifetz and Linsky  (2002).  The common metaphor portrays adaptive problems as “clouds” in  contrast to technical problems, which are seen as “clocks.” You fix  clocks; you cannot fix clouds—sometimes you cannot even get your hands  around them.  Technical fixes are relatively easy—a clock can be  repaired.  Adaptive challenges are more complex; it is impossible to  “repair” a “cloud” and in that sense, there is most likely not one  correct answer but a series of possibilities and experiments to be  considered in order to get your arms around the cloud.  Adaptive  leadership examines the difficult challenges encountered with  non-technical problems or—even more challenging—problems which have both  clock and cloud attributes.

By introducing the concept of adaptive challenges to the discussion  of leadership, Heifetz addresses a dilemma that emerges when leaders  face perplexing problems that defy standard responses. Often the  challenge in business and community arises through common structures  that rely on traditional notions of command and control.  Heifetz’s  notion of adaptive work is built on the idea of engagement—engaging the  problem, engaging the environment, engaging the people—all in  experimental fashion in what often is a successive process of leadership  and engagement.  Civically engaged citizens face more adaptive  challenges than technical fixes within a community.  Perplexing  community issues are adaptive challenges that often require bringing all  the stakeholders to the table and managing the factions that emerge and  argue against decision making solely by institutional actors—such as  city or county officials.  In an adaptive challenge, no single correct  answer exists.  Rather, a “better” answer is sought by bringing factions  of engaged leaders, employees, and citizens together to negotiate among  competing interests to find a collective answer which speaks to  potential losses as well as gains in building common goals and values.

Capacity Planning

1. Compute the capacity in parts per hour of the following:

a) A station with three machines operating in parallel with 20‐minute process times at each station.

b) A balanced line with single –machine stations, all with average processing times of 15 minutes.

c) A four‐station line with single‐machine stations, where the average processing times are 15, 20, 10, 12 minutes, respectively for stations 1, 2, 3, 4.

d) A four‐station line with multiple‐machine stations, where the number of (parallel) machines at stations 1, 2, 3, 4 is 2, 6, 10, 3 respectively. The average processing times at the stations are 10, 24, 40, 18 minutes, respectively.

e) A three‐station line with ample equipment at all stations (i.e. don’t worry about machines—you only need to make calculations for the labor) staffed by six operators who are identical with regard to average processing times and require 10, 15, 5 minutes, respectively on stations 1, 2, 3.

f) The same line as in part e), except that station 2 now consists of only two parallel machines. Stations 1 and 3 still have ample capacity.

2. Is it possible for a line to have the same throughput with both high WIP and high cycle time or low WIP and low cycle time? Which would you rather have? Why?

Week 5 – Assignment 2: Create a Budget and Financial Plan for a Vacation Trip

Here is your opportunity to dream! Choose a vacation destination anywhere in the world (to which you must fly) for a 2-week trip (assume you have vacation time from work to take the trip) that you would like to take exactly 10 years from today. This can either be an individual vacation, a couple trip, or a family excursion, depending on your life circumstances. After you pick your destination (remember, dream big), determine the following:

Determine travel expenses for all members of the group.

Identify lodging expenses for the entire time period of the trip.

Estimate the daily food expenses.

Make a list of activities that you would like to engage in every day of the trip. Determine a cost for each day’s activity list (e.g., tickets to amusement parks, museum entrance fees, boat trips, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, entertainment venues).

Make a list and associated cost estimate of any other expenses that you believe should be included in a total cost estimate for your vacation (e.g., pet boarding, house sitting, airport parking fees).

Determine if someone earning a high income or someone earning minimum wage would be able to afford this trip?

Note: You must research all aspects of your list to substantiate your cost estimates; that is, you must demonstrate and/or document how you derived each cost estimate in the list.

After gathering and organizing all collected data, prepare a document describing your destination (including your reason for choosing that location), listing (and substantiating) all costs of the trip (this can be done in a table and must be clear and provide sufficient detail so that the reader understands your interest and passion for your vacation), and determining a total cost of your dream vacation from the time you leave to the time you return.

Assuming that your estimated total cost will grow by 2.5% per year (due to inflation), demonstrate how you would compute the expected future cost of your dream vacation.

Suppose that you can invest money every month into a fee-free mutual fund and that this fund is expected to have a 10% nominal annual rate of return. Using your estimated future cost (including inflation) as future value, determine the amount of money you must save each month for the next 10 years (i.e., 120 months) to achieve your goal. Then, determine the monthly amount you must save if you delay your trip for an additional 5 years (that is, you will take the trip 15 years from today = 180 months) instead of 10 years from today. (Note: Be sure to add the 5 additional years of inflation to the estimated future cost.) Write an explanation for your calculations so the reader is completely clear on how you derived your required monthly deposits.

Based on this numerical representation of your dream vacation, write a well-contemplated critical analysis of your trip. For example, explore questions such as: is this something that you think is worth saving for, have you changed your mind after seeing the reality of the required sacrifice, are you rethinking the location or luxury level of your accommodations or daily outings, and so on.

Note that you must properly cite all reference sites that you used to collect data to estimate your costs value, etc.

Length: 8 to 10-slide PowerPoint presentation, not including title page and references; (You may wish to include appendix pages in your presentation to accommodate any tables, figures, or images that do not fit within your presentation.)

References: As this is your dream vacation, you will be responsible for researching and providing your references. Please list at least three references.

Your presentation should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
