FORENSIC DESIGN ASSESSMENTS

This task relates to a sequence of assessments that will be repeated across Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Select any example of a visualisation or infographic, maybe your own work or that of others. The task is to undertake a deep, detailed ‘forensic’ like assessment of the design choices made across each of the five layers of the chosen visualisation’s anatomy. In each case your assessment is only concerned with one design layer at a time.

For this task, take a close look at the colour choices:

Start by identifying all the applications of colour deployed, listing them under the headers of 1) data legibility, 2) editorial salience, and 3) functional harmony.

How suitable are the choices and deployment of these colours? If they are not, what do you think they should have been?

Go through the set of ‘Influencing factors’ from the latter section of the book’s chapter to help shape your assessment and to possibly inform how you might tackle this design layer differently

Also, considering the range of potential applications of colour, what would you do differently or additionally?

Cyber Risk Assessment and Cyber Insurance

Case Assignment

There are various methods in conducting a risk assessment.  Any method used is likely to include in some shape or form hazards, vulnerabilities and impacts.  Once completed, this risk assessment can be used to develop strategies to prepare, respond, recover, and mitigate cyber threats.

For this case, answer the following:

Describe the steps to conduct a risk assessment to achieve the goals for information security (availability, integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and assurance).

Module 4 – SLP

Cyber Risk Assessment and Cyber Insurance

Despite the fact that cyber risks and cyber security are widely acknowledged to be a serious threat, many companies today still do not purchase cyber risk insurance. However, this situation is changing. Recent legal developments underscore the fact that reliance on traditional insurance policies is not enough, as companies face growing liabilities in this fast-evolving area. For example, more than 70 class actions lawsuits were filed against Target Corporation alone by its customers following its 2013 holiday season data breach that compromised up to 110 million customer accounts.

For this SLP, answer the following:

  1. What do cyber insurance policies cover and exclude (i.e., First Party vs. Third Party)?
  2. What factors might an insurance company consider in assessing the risk level (exposure) of a certain business (i.e., Organizational, Technical, Policies & Procedures, Legal & Compliance)?
  3. In your opinion, are cyber insurance policies a viable option for businesses to mitigate cyber risk? Explain.

The Military Partnerships

Case Assignment

The Military Partnerships: Terrorism

United States Northern Command

U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) was established October 1, 2002, to provide command and control of Department of Defense (DoD) homeland defense efforts and to coordinate defense support of civil authorities. NORTHCOM defends America’s homeland—protecting our people, national power, and freedom of action.*

*From NORTHCOM website.

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD)

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a United States and Canada binational organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. Aerospace warning includes the monitoring of man-made objects in space, and the detection, validation, and warning of attack against North America whether by aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, through mutual support arrangements with other commands.**

**From NORAD website.

2011 NORAD and USNORTHCOM Posture Statement

Posture Statement: Counterterrorism and Force Protection. Because violent extremists present a threat that currently exhibits both the capability and the intent to attack our nation, Counterterrorism and Force Protection continue to be a vital focus area for USNORTHCOM and NORAD.***

***From Winnefeld, A.J.A. (2011). Posture Statement, p. 3.

Refer to the above three sources plus the NRF when answering the questions below:

  1. How would you include the DoD in your Emergency Response Plan? Or would you?
  2. Scenario: A federal building suddenly blows up in your city where you are in charge of the Emergency Response Plan. You are called by law enforcement officers who note that they have apprehended three military personnel with explosives in their possession. The two men and one woman are listed as AWOL; they have threatened that if they are not released, another operative will blow up more undisclosed buildings. The police have contacted the FBI and will detain the personnel. Meanwhile, two more buildings explode near a military outpost in which civilians and military personnel were killed. What will be your first step? Why? Be specific and cite your sources.
  3. As Incident Commander, would you be in charge of posting U.S. Army personnel in strategic locations in your town during a terrorist attack? Please cite specific policy in your response.

Assignment Expectations

Length: Case Assignments should be at least three pages long.

References: At least two references should be included from academic sources (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles). Required readings are included. The references should be cited within the text and also listed at the end of the assignment in the References section (preferably in APA format).

Quoted material should not exceed 10% of the total paper (since the focus of these assignments is critical thinking). Use your own words and build on the ideas of others. When material is copied verbatim from external sources, it must be enclosed in quotes.

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper.

Format: APA format is recommended (but not required) for this assignment. See Syllabus page for more information on APA format.

Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted for minor errors, assignments are expected to adhere to standard guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity.

The following items will be assessed in particular:

  • Relevance – All content is connected to the question.
  • Precision – Specific question is addressed. Statements, facts, and statistics are specific and accurate.
  • Depth of discussion – Points that lead to deeper issues are presented and integrated.
  • Breadth – Multiple perspectives and references, multiple issues/factors considered.

  • Clarity – Writing is concise, understandable, and contains sufficient detail or examples.
  • Objectivity – Paper avoids use of first person and subjective bias.

Module 2 – SLP

The Military Partnerships

The Military Partnerships: Humanitarian/Support Role

The role of the Department of Defense (DoD) is outlined in certain directives. Its function is specific to natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes) and to man-made disasters (e.g., major toxic spill or terrorist attack). Knowing the DoD’s role in your ERP and as outlined in a Concept of Operations Plan is essential. Moreover, knowing how the DoD will interface with other support sectors will lessen any confusion when a disaster occurs.

  1. Find language regarding military involvement in the NRF. Especially note the command structure. Would the National Guard (if deemed necessary) be called out first? By whom? When would the Guard be called out—give examples. When would a military branch (e.g., the Army) be called out? Remember to cite your sources.
  2. Locate other directives regarding the military’s possible involvement during a national emergency. Under what conditions would the armed services be involved? What would be some of their functions? Remember to cite your sources.

Management Assignment #6: SIMULATION/PAPER PROMPT

DUE DATE: Friday (12:00 EST)!!

https://s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/blackboard.learn.xythos.prod/599df4b472ef3/4695627?response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%2A%3DUTF-8%27%27MGMT757%2520Simulation%2520Manual.pdf&response-content-type=application%2Fpdf&X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Date=20190408T153509Z&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&X-Amz-Expires=86400&X-Amz-Credential=AKIAIL7WQYDOOHAZJGWQ%2F20190408%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Signature=d5903258407121394bb41ae8b1f81521179be41904936428bea2385aaf5d89e5

Following are the general steps to follow for the simulation:

1) Go through the simulation Years 1 thru 4.  You may do this 3 times.

2) For each attempt (Years 1 thru 4) your will receive 3 performance metrics – Gross Margin Dollars, Gross Margin % and Number of votes from Board Members)

NOTE: Your highest score for each metric from any of the 3 attempts will be used for scoring!!!

3) Complete the record sheets to document or capture the decisions and board feedback you received. These will be used in writing the final paper. Keep notes of the strategies you used in each attempt and complete the final paper addressing the following:

4) The paper centers on your overall performance in the simulation as measured by:   1) Gross Margin (dollars),  2) Gross Margin %, and 3) Total number of votes from board members. The simulation will provide this data for you. Final Paper for Simulation: The simulation experience will be summarized in the PAPER.

The following is the Access Code you will be using to enter the simulation for the completion of the Week 6 assignment: *******

Completion of the simulation is limited to 3 times per person. (This means going through the 4 years provided in each simulation attempt, three times) I recommend using 1 for trial/practice in (The highest score received in each category from any one of the attempts will be used for grading the simulation results per the Weekly Rubric.)

Following is the information you will need to access the simulation and operate it successfully.  While the simulation is an individual learning experience, you may help one another in navigation mechanics.  Do not make decisions for one another as this will make writing the final paper very difficult at best. I am able to view all players in their respective simulations.

For the Simulation Access Code – **********

You are expected to keep records of your Operational Management strategies, decisions sets and the resulting outcomes. I recommend that you develop a method (such as a spread sheet or word document using tables) to help you keep organized. The simulation also provides detailed information.  This will provide the support for writing the paper. (Note: References/Reference Page will not be required for the paper.) THIS WILL BE SUBMITTED THROUGHT TURNITIN SO BE CAREFUL WITH ORIGINALITY/PLAIGIRISM!

Final Paper – Required Content:

(Note: Use the following for the Headings or Sub-headings in your paper per APA guidelines, 6th Edition.)

1.       Summarize the case that the simulation is based upon. Identify the significant challenges for management.

2.       State the Operation Management strategy(ies) that you used at the beginning of the simulation

3.       Summarize the major decisions made and their resulting outcomes.

4.       State the changes (if any) that were needed in strategy as the simulation progressed.

5.       State the operational conditions and outcomes at the end of the simulation

6.       Reflect on this learning experience:  what lessons were learned, what skills were gained, what relevance will this be to you in your profession as a manager?

Length of paper should be 9-10 pages!!!!
