History Primary Source Analysis

“Manifest Destiny,” John O’Sullivan, 1845

John O’Sullivan described westward expansion as “Manifest Destiny,” in an article written in 1845. The idea of “Manifest Destiny” was important because it both defined a basis for expansionist policies and became a central defining feature of American culture.

Write an analysis of O’Sullivan’s statement on “Manifest Destiny” that responds to the following questions:

  1. What is “Manifest Destiny”?
  2. Why did O’Sullivan believe that Americans should settle westward and how did he justify expansionist policies? Please draw on the document itself to support your answer; what language does O’Sullivan use to support his argument?
  3. The idea of “Manifest Destiny” has been evaluated by historians as having had both positive and negative influences on American society and culture. In what ways might it have been positive, and in what ways might it have been negative? Your answer to this question should reference at least two other sources from class; any source of your choice and “American Progress” by Gast, the painting that became an iconographic representation of expansion and progress in the United States.
  4. Please pose at least one discussion question about this source. What do you think is important to talk about with regard to O’Sullivan’s support for American expansion?

Responses will be graded according to the following criteria:

Does the response address all the questions posed?

Does the response demonstrate that the student has done a close and careful analysis?

Does the response offer a thoughtful engagement with the source?

Does the response demonstrate a concerted effort to think about the significance of the source and its relationship to course topics?

Does the response make sense? Are the ideas within it clearly communicated?

Is the response written in essay form, with a thesis, a set of paragraphs that each address a distinct argument in support of the thesis, and a conclusion?

Data Analytics

Many companies and placement agencies require candidates to have knowledge about Excel as part of their recruitment process. Knowledge of Excel is useful in several fields in various industries, especially data analysis. Read the assigned chapter for the week. Come up with a use case for the concepts covered using real-world data for a business or organization.

In the discussion forum, post a brief explanation of your data, the business or organization, and the use case in the appropriate forum of the message board. You cannot use the same business or dataset as one of your peers. If you are uncertain of the data or organization to use for this assignment, use the discussion forum to brainstorm with your peers.

Once you have chosen a data set and organization, create an Excel file in which you apply functions to demonstrate the use case. On a separate sheet in the Excel file, write a brief overview and summary in which you:

  • Provide an overview of your data, business/organization, and use case
  • Analyze the data and give reasoning of why you think it is useful to the business or organization.
  • Articulate what Excel functions you have used and apply it to the dataset to demonstrate it.

Submit your complete Excel file here. Replies and responses to the discussion forum are not a graded component of these assignments, but you are expected to respond to your peers and participate in any brainstorming.

financial markets

This activity helps students recognize the significant role accounting plays in providing financial information to management for decision making through the evaluation of financial statements. This experiential assignment requires students to use ratios to evaluate and analyze a company’s liquidity, solvency, and profitability.

Two-Rivers Inc. (TRI) manufactures a variety of consumer products. The company’s founders have run the company for thirty years and are now interested in retiring. Consequently, they are seeking a purchaser, and a group of investors is looking into the acquisition of TRI. To evaluate its financial stability, TRI was requested to provide its latest financial statements and selected financial ratios. Summary information provided by TRI is presented below.

#2

Purpose of Assignment

This week’s activity illustrates the role a company’s accounting method plays in financial statement reporting. In this assignment, students evaluate the events occuring in a business setting and determine how to properly analyze those events to identify the impact on both cash and accrual accounting methods.

Resources

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Tutorial help on Excel and Word functions can be found on the Microsoft Office website. There are also additional tutorials via the web offering support for Office products.

Assignment Steps

Scenario: BizCon, a consulting firm, has just completed its first year of operations. The company’s sales growth was explosive. To encourage clients to hire its services, BizCon offered 180-day financing – meaning its largest customers do not pay for nearly 6 months. Because BizCon is a new company, its equipment suppliers insist on being paid cash on delivery. Also, it had to pay up front for 2 years of insurance. At the end of the year, BizCon owed employees for one full month of salaries, but due to a cash shortfall, it promised to pay them the first week of next year.

As the senior accountant, the Chief Financial Officer has asked you to prepare a memo to be sent to management notifying them of the delayed wage payments.

Prepare the memo in a maximum 500 words using business writing (see week 1) including the following information to better outline the situation:

Explain how cash and accrual accounting differs for each of the events listed in the above scenario and describe the proper accrual accounting.

Assess how at the end of the year, BizCon reported a favorable net income, yet the company’s management is concerned because the company is very short of cash. Explain to management how BizCon could have positive net income and yet run out of cash.

USE the memo template provided in week 1 for formatting. ONLY use APA for citations and references.

#3

Purpose of Assignment

The activity requires students to perform research and analysis on competing companies and the potential implications of international standards. This real-world analysis is key to understanding how a company’s profitability, liquidity, and solvency can be useful for all users. Students also learn to analyze financial statements and use managerial tools to make decisions from an investor’s and creditor’s standpoint.

Assignment Steps

Select two competing companies, that are US publicly traded, and locate annual reports for these two companies by going DIRECTLY TO THE COMPANY WEBSITES TO DOWNLOAD THE ANNUAL REPORT OR 10-K. DO NOT USE SUMMARY SITES.

Research the two companies on the Internet and download the Annual Reports with the Income Statement, Statement of Shareholders’ Equity, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows.

IN EXCEL:

Make a 5-year trend analysis for each company:

Net sales.

Net income.

Compute for the two most recent years the:

Debt to assets ratio.

Compute for two most recent years the:

Profit margin.

Asset turnover.

Return on assets.

Develop a maximum 500-word APA Formatted Paper and include the following:

Evaluate the financial opportunity presented by the companies. If you were a creditor, which company would you be more likely to lend money to? Defend your decision.

Which company would you recommend as an investment? Discuss the items that were considered in your decision.

At which company would you prefer a management position and why?

Show your work in Excel®.

Complete calculations/computations using Excel®

Include the four financial statements along with your assignment or a working link, clearly indicated.

Format your assignment consistent with APA guidelines USING THE APA TEMPLATE PAPER I PROVIDED.

Click/Select the Add Text button to type in or paste your assignment. Alternately, you can upload your assignment from your system by Clicking/Selecting the Add Files button or upload it from your OneDrive account by Clicking/Selecting the OneDrive button.

#4

Purpose of Assignment

The materials covered this week distinguish between the different costing methods and provides needed tools for decision making. This case study focuses on determining equivalent units in a production business setting.

Resources

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), U.S. Securities and Exchange Committee (SEC)

Assignment Steps

Scenario: Davis Skaros has recently been promoted to production manager. He has just started to receive various managerial reports, including the production cost report you prepared. It showed his department had 2,000 equivalent units in ending inventory. His department has had a history of not keeping enough inventory on hand to meet demand. He has come to you, very angry, and wants to know why you credited him with only 2,000 units when he knows he had at least twice that many on hand.

Prepare a maximum 500-word informal memo and explain to Mr. Skaros why his production cost report showed only 2,000 equivalent units in ending inventory. Using a professional tone, explain to him clearly why your report is accurate.

USE the memo template provided in week 1.

#5

Purpose of Assignment

The Case Study focuses on CVP (Cost-Volume-Profit), break-even, and margin of safety analyses which allows students to experience working through a business scenario and applying these tools in managerial decision making.

Resources

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Scenario: Mary Willis is the advertising manager for Bargain Shoe Store. She is currently working on a major promotional campaign. Her ideas include the installation of a new lighting system and increased display space that will add $24,000 in fixed costs to the $270,000 in fixed costs currently spent. In addition, Mary is proposing a 5% price decrease ($40 to $38) will produce a 20% increase in sales volume (20,000 to 24,000). Variable costs will remain at $24 per pair of shoes. Management is impressed with Mary’s ideas but concerned about the effects these changes will have on the break-even point and the margin of safety.

Assignment Steps

Complete the following:

Compute the current break-even point in units, and compare it to the break-even point in units if Mary’s ideas are used.

Compute the margin of safety ratio for current operations and after Mary’s changes are introduced (Round to nearest full percent).

Prepare a CVP (Cost-Volume-Profit) income statement for current operations and after Mary’s changes are introduced.

Prepare a maximum 500-word informal memo to management addressing Mary’s suggested changes.

Explain whether Mary’s changes should be adopted. Why or why not? Analyze the above information (three bullet points above) and use this information to support your suggestion.

USE the memo template provided in week 1.

Show your work in Excel.

Complete calculations/computations using Excel.

Submit your assignment.

Administration Case Study

1) Is there a relationship between product (level of treadmill) and gender? Test at the 5% level of significance, and show all 6 steps of the hypothesis testing procedure. In step 6, be sure to indicate why the company would want to know if there is such a relationship! HINT: first make a pivot table with product in the rows and gender in the columns. Those are your observed frequencies. Then find the expected frequencies and your chi-square. NOTE: do you understand why this is chapter 12 material and not chapter 13 material?

2) Is there a relationship between a person’s age and the number of miles they intend to walk/run on the treadmill each week? And can you predict the number of miles a 27-year-old would walk/run? Here’s what I’d like you to do.

· First form a scatter diagram. Does there seem to be a linear relationship between age and miles?

· Now run the regression procedure that can use age as a predictor of miles. Remember, all of this is to be done using Excel…no hand calculations are necessary!

· Interpret the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination in practical form.

· Predict the number of miles a 27-year-old would walk/run

· Interpret the slope

Based On Brase & Brase

Visit the NASDAQ historical prices weblink. First, set the date range to be for exactly 1 year ending on the Monday that this course started. For example, if the current term started on April 1, 2018, then use April 1, 2017 – March 31, 2018. (Do NOT use these dates. Use the dates that match up with the current term.) Do this by clicking on the blue dates after “Time Period”. Next, click the “Apply” button. Next, click the link on the right side of the page that says “Download Data” to save the file to your computer.

This project will only use the Close values. Assume that the closing prices of the stock form a normally distributed data set. This means that you need to use Excel to find the mean and standard deviation. Then, use those numbers and the methods you learned in sections 6.1-6.3 of the course textbook for normal distributions to answer the questions. Do NOT count the number of data points.

Complete this portion of the assignment within a single Excel file. Show your work or explain how you obtained each of your answers. Answers with no work and no explanation will receive no credit.

1. a) Submit a copy of your dataset along with a file that contains your answers to all of the following questions.

b) What the mean and Standard Deviation (SD) of the Close column in your data set?

c) If a person bought 1 share of Google stock within the last year, what is the probability that the stock on that day closed at less than the mean for that year? Hint: You do not want to calculate the mean to answer this one. The probability would be the same for any normal distribution. (5 points)

2. If a person bought 1 share of Google stock within the last year, what is the probability that the stock on that day closed at more than $950? (5 points)

3. If a person bought 1 share of Google stock within the last year, what is the probability that the stock on that day closed within $50 of the mean for that year? (between 50 below and 50 above the mean) (5 points)

4. If a person bought 1 share of Google stock within the last year, what is the probability that the stock on that day closed at less than $800 per share. Would this be considered unusal? Use the definition of unusual from the course textbook that is measured as a number of standard deviations (5 points)

5. At what prices would Google have to close in order for it to be considered statistically unusual? You will have a low and high value. Use the definition of unusual from the course textbook that is measured as a number of standard deviations. (5 points)

6. What are Quartile 1, Quartile 2, and Quartile 3 in this data set? Use Excel to find these values. This is the only question that you must answer without using anything about the normal distribution. (5 points)

7. Is the normality assumption that was made at the beginning valid? Why or why not? Hint: Does this distribution have the properties of a normal distribution as described in the course textbook? Real data sets are never perfect, however, it should be close. One option would be to construct a histogram like you did in Project 1 to see if it has the right shape. Something in the range of 10 to 12 classes is a good number. (5 points)

There are also 5 points for miscellaneous items like correct date range, correct mean, correct SD, etc.

Use the dates October 23, 2017 – October 22, 2018.

Be sure to save the file as .xls or .xlsx. These are the only extensions I am able to open.  (NOTE: Files with a .csv extension will NOT show your cell formulas.  If you upload a file with this extension, you will receive point deductions for no work shown.)

2.  Now is a good time to review the instructions on how to use Excel to find the mean and standard deviation. For the mean, choose the =AVERAGE command and use the parentheses to indicate the range of cells where your data can be found in your Excel column.  The command for the standard deviation is =STDEV with the range of data cells in parentheses.

3. Do not be alarmed because the project involves a large set of data. Most questions amount to finding the z-scores and then the probability associated with that z-score.

4.  The command to find the quartile in Excel is =quartile(array,1) for Q1, =quartile(array,2) for Q2, and =quartile(array,3) for Q3.

5.  We will only be using the CLOSE values (column E). You can delete the other columns (except the dates column) after you download the data.

6.  Show your work either in formulas in the Excel file or verbally show how you arrived at your answers.
