ASSIGNMENT:

For your final research paper, you will synthesize your analysis of primary sources with support from secondary sources.  You’ve already done this with your synthesis analysis essay, but this time, you will be doing original research. You are required to use Octavia Butler’s Fledgling as one of your primary sources; the rest of the primary sources can be any science fiction novel, short story, movie, or TV show.

Your first step is to find an interesting underlying social message about values, behaviors, and/or relationships in Butler’s novel. For the previous essays, you were assigned a social message (what it means to be human and gender), but this time, you will need to identify one in the novel.  There are many options, but here are some suggestions: individual and community, heroism, identity, power, family, gender, or race (please do not feel you are limited to these).

Next, research additional primary sources that also have your chosen underlying social message. Please do not use any of the primary sources that you have already used for an essay for this class–that means that you cannot use The Left Hand of Darkness. You are welcome to use any of the stories in the Wesleyan Anthology as long as you have not previously used it for an essay. You can also choose from any science fiction movies and/or TV shows if you’d like. The number of additional primary sources is up to you, but I’d say that 2-4 total primary sources is a manageable amount.

Then, research 3-5 secondary sources (at least one academic) that will help support your analysis of the underlying social message. For example, if your underlying social message is about community, then you might research psychology papers on the positive effects of community. Please note that you cannot use any of the readings that I have assigned for this class as secondary sources—your sources must come from your own research.

Finally, write an essay that synthesizes your primary and secondary sources in order to support your analysis of underlying social messages of behaviors, values, and/or relationships in Butler’s novel and your other chosen science fiction primary sources.

ADDITIONAL ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS IN THE LINKED CLASS WITH PSYCHOLOGY 222:

For your 3-5 secondary sources, at least three (not one) of them must be academic, and all your secondary sources must be in the discipline of psychology or neuroscience, so please make sure that you choose an analysis of an underlying social message that you can support with secondary sources in the discipline of psychology or neuroscience.

HELPFUL HINTS:

Thesis: Your thesis should make an arguable and original claim about the pattern of underlying messages about social values, behaviors, and/or relationships implicit in the primary sources.

Body Paragraphs: Your body paragraphs should support your thesis and should include topic sentences, which clearly assert a point related to your thesis, illustration from the primary sources and secondary sources that support your point, and explanation of how your illustration supports your point.  Again, an easy way to remember these actions is through the acronym, PIE. Keep in mind that although every point will need at least one quote (or example if it’s a movie or TV show) from the primary sources as illustration, not every point will require a quote or paraphrase from the secondary source as illustration.  Use the secondary sources where you feel they best support your analysis.  You can also include secondary source support in your introduction and/or conclusion in addition to whichever body paragraphs you feel need secondary source support.

Conclusion: Your conclusion should sum up the points in your paper, re-state your thesis if necessary, and then draw a conclusion from those points.

In-text Citations: Please review this handout on citing quotations from literature. Conventions for Writing about Literature.doc  Please also review this handout for citing quotations and paraphrases of academic articles. Integrating Quotes for Nonfiction.doc    Keep in mind that both quotations and paraphrasing of the secondary sources will require parenthetical in-text citation of the page numbers. Please also use thes ereference guides for any in-text citation questions that aren’t addressed by the handouts (Both references are also located in the Course Resources Module):

Strategic Plan And Powerpoint

As a group or individually please do the following:

  • Choose a company, any company, but preferably one that one of you are familiar with or with which you have some sort of direct contact or knowledge.  You may use the one you used in your model exercises or start anew.
  • Using our 3 Circles model analyze your company’s major products, lines, or business units.  Remember, our 3 Circles model includes: market forces of customers and competitors as well as the internal resources of the organization.
  • Identify two or more opportunities for growth.  Using our 3 Circles model (including worksheets below in powerpoint) develop a growth strategy for the company for those opportunities.  Demonstrate proficiency of our 3 Circles model.
  • A big component that I will be looking for is how did you determine customer importance of your attributes as well as how well they rated you and your competitor on those attributes.  Were customers canvased for unmet needs (area G)?  How well did you do your sorting to choose potential growth options?  How does your option provide greater value to the customer?
  • Develop a plan for how the company can best finance the growth opportunity (internal funds, debt, or equity).  Please provide a profitability projection that justifies whatever form of financing you have selected.  You must financially compare two or more growth opportunities.  Please use our financial model (worksheet).  Demonstrate that the opportunity you chose financially out performs other opportunities available to the company. Justify your position.

What is due:

You must have a power point presentation of your analysis. Please make this presentation as if you were trying to convince “the board” to pursue the opportunity. Please make sure to tell me why you selected the opportunities you did relative to others.  Please demonstrate any applicable principles you may have learned in class. Make sure you demonstrate your proficiency with the 3 circles model (use the worksheets).  You should present each of the worksheets that you learned in model exercises 2-4 (Context statement, Worksheets {2 is most important}, and a three circles “map”) done for your specific company.  Your financial comparison of your options should use the template you learned with the Issy Cake assignments.  And remember, you are only concerned about differential or incremental revenues, costs, and investments that are specific to your initiative.

Please deposit or upload your presentation material in the drop box below.  Only one student per group should make the submission but please list all your group members (full names) on your cover page/slide.  Your grade will be based on how well you present your findings (did you sell yourself, does your model and financial analysis support your position).  Please refer to the grading tab below and make sure you have each element presented/covered in your presentation.

TEEN PREGNANCY AND STDs

COMMENT AND ADD INFORMATION TO THE TEXT BELOW WITH MINIMUM OF 500 WORDS

250 WORDS FOR THIS TOPIC

1)The topic that I chose to research is Teens and STD’s.  As I read Chapter 14 power point about sexually transmitted disease/infection, I was concerned that the number of people who are getting STD’s are increasing especially in teens.  Adolescent is a stage of human development in which adolescents or teens explore sexual feelings.  I think teens may or may not take risks of sexually transmitted diseases seriously and on how it can affect their life permanently.

The first thing I learned that surprisingly shocked me is that two million people in 2016 have been reported to have sexually transmitted disease and that this number has been the highest rate ever reported.  Also, half of these people are reportedly young people.  On the article “Study: Many teens and young women think STD’s can’t happen to them” , teens are knowledgeable about STD yet  fails to get tested.  Despite the educational efforts to provide teens with information about risks of STD, many teens continue to engage in risky behavior and do not take this matter seriously.  If this continues, number of this case will increase rapidly.

The Second thing that I learned is that doctors may be part of the problem of increasing rate of STD. It is sad to know that some teens tend to not say anything to the doctor due to discomfort of discussing STD. Patients should be comfortable talking to the doctor about their health issues. In my opinion, it is not only the doctor’s responsibility to educate teens but everyone such as school teachers, nurses, people who surround teens and most importantly, the parents.  In the ted talk by Taylor Mali, I am amazed by how he cares for his students. I think that in order for teens to be comfortable speaking about private issues is that educators must show a concern about the teen’s issues.

I think the most important point I want all my classmate to know is that educating teens about STD would not be enough but the implementation of the knowledge about STD. Teens must have an access to the types of testing STD without judgment. Also, teens must be thought that testing STD is okay or testing STD is very important. I believe that parents play a huge role in teaching teens about sex education or these types of diseases and infection.

AND ANOTHER 250 WORDS REGARDING THIS TOPIC

2)I found teen pregnancy as an interesting topic so that’s why I chose this topic. In the past, teen pregnancy had a high rate and now its lower than before then it was now. “In 2017, a total of 194,377 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 18.8 per 1,000 women in this age group”(1). It was decreased by 7 % compared to the previous year. More and more adolescents are learning and taking actions in preventing teen  pregnancy and understanding the consequences that follow if they don’t take precautions. “Adolescent mothers are more likely to experience medical complications during the months of pregnancy and their labor is likely to be prolonged. The babies are at greater risk of being premature and of low birth weight” (2). Young adolescent mothers would have complications due to their bodies not fully developing fully and have to have a strict diet to consume to right about providing nutrients for the pregnancy and their growing bodies during puberty. And even older adolescent mothers may have health complications, usually adolescents aren’t eating the correct amount of nutrients and if mothers aren’t eating right, then it could harm the child even stress can cause harm.

A fact that I found interesting is that “Nearly half of pregnant teenagers will have an abortion. Most others will become single mothers”(2).I didn’t know that half of teen pregnancy lead to abortion, I would have thought it was less then that. And according to the Child Trend: Teen Abortion, “In 2013, 24 percent of teen pregnancies ended in abortion”(3). This surprised me even more that it decreased drastically, a little more than half of the previous percentage, compared to the first percentage of abortion. Another fact that surprised me was that “children born to teenage mothers have significantly lower cognitive test scores at age two, compared to children born of intended pregnancy”(4). Adolescents should know the effects of teenage pregnancy could have on not only the mother but the child as well.

Teen pregnancy life is a difficult life to follow through regarding health, education, social impressions, and future complications.“Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age, whereas approximately 90% of women who do not give birth during adolescence graduate from high school”(1). Adolescent pregnancy affects the mother’s education not to mention that she not only has to deal with her pregnancy but what others think and say about her negatively, thus the reason for them to decide to drop out of school. “Teen fathers are also less likely to finish high school, and the jobs they hold will most likely be lower paying than those of men who wait to have children”(4). It not only affects young mothers but the fathers as well. Some would leave because they know that it has complications and some stay because they think in their minds that it’s the right thing. And when they do stay, they will most likely to drop out of school as well to be able to support the child if the mother decide to not to do the abortion procedure.
