Part 1

Unobtrusive Observation Exercise: This assignment involves engaging in at least 30 minutes of unobtrusive observation – meaning that you observe a social setting, but do not directly interact with it or participate beyond being quietly present. During your observation, you should take notes about: the demographics of those present, the behavioral or cultural norms you observe, the physical environment, and any particular events or dynamics that you take note of. You should turn in a brief report (minimum 2 pages) synthesizing your notes. Your report should be double-spaced, 12 point font, default margins.

Part 2

Participant Observation Exercise: This assignment involves engaging in at least 30 minutes of participant observation – meaning that you should observe a social setting while also participating in it, and interacting with others as a part of that setting. After your observation, you should write down what you noticed about participant demographics, behavioral or cultural norms or activities you participated in or witnessed, the physical environment, how you felt during your participation, and any other particular events or dynamics that you take note of. You should turn in a briefreport (minimum 2 pages) synthesizing your notes. Your report should be double-spaced, 12 point font, default margins.
