Electronic Surveillance

Read the article found on the New York Timestitled, “Bush Lets U.S. Spy on Callers Without Courts” found at http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/16/politics/16program.html?pagewanted=all. Next, support your opinion for or against the use of electronic surveillance of U.S. citizens without court orders in cases of suspected terrorist activities.

RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT: While it may seem unethical during modern times I think it would be better to use electronic surveillance on U.S. citizens due to terrorist groups and attacks. There have been bombings and shootings all across the country taking innocent lives and maybe the use of electronic surveillance would have given the chance for some of those lives to be saved. 9/11 is very close to me because my mom worked in the Pentagon when the plane hit, it was her second day of working there and even though I was only 10 years old I remember it all as if it was just yesterday. It was the scariest day of my life not knowing whether my mom was dead or alive. If the government could take action to prevent even one attack I think it is worthwhile. Precautions have to be taken to save lives and everyone knows a persons smart phone is a part of the majority of their life. Being able to looking into messages, listen in on phone calls, and check search history some attacks may be able to be prevented. I personally would not have a problem with someone listening in on my phone calls because I am not engaging in illegal activity and I want what is best for the United States and the people who live here.
