The purpose of this assignment is for you to develop an informative newsletter for parents, staff, and children. You will familiarize yourself with various formats of newsletters, conduct a meeting to discuss the potential contents of the newsletter, and then develop and deliver a newsletter for your early childhood program. Developing Ideas for the Newsletter

Consult with the director about newsletters that the center has developed and distributed in the past. Your newsletter could follow this template. You may also research the Internet for examples of newsletters that have been developed by other early childhood programs. To get relevant results, try searching combinations of “newsletter” and one or more of the following key words:

  • Sample, example, template or model
  • Early childhood
  • Curriculum

  • Parent

When you find newsletters that appeal to you, ask yourself why you think they are appealing. Once your research is complete, you should have a good idea of the range of possibilities for newsletter design. You may want to print a few examples that you like for your next step, which is to plan a meeting with the director and with teachers and parents who want to participate in a discussion of the newsletter.

When you meet about the newsletter, consider the following questions:

  • What format should we use? (Bring printed examples to show some possibilities.)
  • What events should be in the newsletter?
  • What notices need to be included?
  • What information do families need and want to know?
  • How can we involve the children?

Drafting the Newsletter

Take detailed notes of everyone’s suggestions and use these notes to complete a rough draft of the newsletter. If possible, involve the children by asking them for testimonials, art work, or input on the contents of the newsletter. Once your rough draft is complete, show it to the director of your program and ask for feedback. Implement any necessary revisions. Once your revised draft is complete, have the director take a final look at it. When the newsletter is finalized, ask the director if you can mail or otherwise distribute the newsletter to staff and families.

Reporting on the Newsletter

As you prepare your newsletter for submission, write a 250-word report that answers the following questions:

  • What was the process of constructing the newsletter like for you?
  • What do you like best about the newsletter, and why?
  • What would you change about the newsletter, and why?
  • Were you able to distribute the newsletter to staff and families? Why, or why not?

To Successfully Complete the Newsletter Assignment:

  • Become familiar with characteristics of various newsletters used in early childhood programs.
  • Conduct a meeting with the director and interested teachers and families to get ideas for the newsletter.
  • Complete a rough draft of the newsletter and ask the director to provide feedback.

  • Write a 250-word report on the newsletter process and product.
