Action Items

  1. Submit the completed first draft of your assignment. Your work will automatically be checked by Turnitin.
  2. Access your Turnitin report by reviewing your Submission Details for this assignment. Please review the Turnitin Similarity Report to ensure the highlighted areas in the report are appropriately paraphrased or quoted. The percentage provided by Turnitin should not be your focus; rather, we recommend the following considerations for utilizing the Similarity Report to edit your writing:
  3. Check that you have not included prior writing verbatim without further writing development. It makes sense that you would draw upon prior writing, but you should not include long passages of verbatim prior writing.
  4. Cite paraphrased work from your prior courses (for more information on this, please see the descriptions of Self-Plagiarism in the APA Manual). Again, you should be adding significantly to the paraphrased portions of your prior work.
  5. By the due date indicated, re-submit the final version of your work.

Comprehensive Exam Questions

Purpose

To demonstrate satisfactory completion of the comprehensive exam and mastery of program outcomes covered in various courses in the program of study.

Overview

The comprehensive exam is the threshold for doctoral students as they transition to doctoral candidacy. The comprehensive exams are designed to assess student preparation for their dissertation work through their written analyses, syntheses, integration and interpretations of the exam questions. Students are expected to perform at the doctoral candidacy level to pass the comprehensive exams. Responses to the comprehensive exam questions should communicate complex ideas with clarity and be grounded in a strong command of scholarly work in the field. Responses should demonstrate expertise in writing quality, research integrity and ethics, and discipline-knowledge. Students are provided feedback to help them move forward with their dissertation work.

You have one module to complete all examination questions provided to you in the course website. The exam is comprised of three questions, one from your program content area, one from a research ethics perspective and one from a research related area. You are required to observe utmost academic integrity while taking the exam (see academic policies found in the syllabus section of the course). Note that you are required to submit your written responses to Turnitin (which is integrated into the “A” Response assignment for each of the three questions) before final submission for grading. Ensure that you budget your time well so you are able to complete all the questions.

Completion of Exam

Complete all the exam questions provided to you. Ensure that you:

  • Answer all questions as thoroughly as possible.
  • Cite any attributions used in your responses following APA.
  • Submit your written responses to Turnitin before final submission for grading.
  • Do this by submitting each question to the appropriate “A” Response assignment and reviewing the feedback from Turnitin.
  • Revise your responses as necessary following feedback from Turnitin.

Submission Instructions

  • By the due date indicated, submit your work for grading.

Grading

Each question is graded on a standalone basis. To successfully complete the comprehensive exam, each student must pass each of the three questions. Each student’s performance will be scored in these categories: Question 1 – Evidence of Discipline Knowledge & Integration of Theory and Practice, Question 2 – Research and Ethics, Question 3 – Literature Review & Research Abilities. In addition to these specific points, all questions will be graded on Quality of Writing and Overall analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of questions. The grading for each criterion will be based on a 100 point scale (95-100 = Exemplary, 90-94 = Competent, 84-89 = Developing, 75-83 = Poor, 0-75 = Unacceptable).  Passing scores for each question, considering all three criteria, will be 84%.

Students are strongly encouraged to discuss with their committee chair and/or committee members about their expectations and content-specific grading criteria for the exams in advance.
